PEZ Top 12 Of '09: #5 Andy Schleck's Victory In Liege
Sunday, December 27, 2009  11:54:41 AM PT
Sometimes, it's hard to remember that Andy Schleck is all of 24 years of age. The younger Schleck brother leapt to the top rung of the sport in 2009 with a huge season that included a win at Liege-Bastogne-Liege, what should have been a win at Fleche-Wallonne, and the second spot on the podium at the Tour de France. Peter Easton looks back at Andy Schleck's year.

PEZ Top 12 Of '09: #6 Wiggins' 4th At Le Tour
Friday, December 25, 2009  9:03:54 PM PT
When you look back on Bradley Wiggins' 2009 season, and in particular his Tour de France, you start looking for superlatives or nicknames that make sense. Mr. 180. The Phoenix. Incredible. Revelation.

PEZ Top 12 Of '09: #7 Thor's Green Jersey
Friday, December 25, 2009  12:36:31 PM PT
Another nail biting points competition triumph at the Tour de France, edging out the Manx Express Mark Cavendish gives us another chance to refer to the mighty Thor as the Jolly Green Giant. It wasn’t just in July that the big fella swung the hammer though - he was good all the way through the year, as we’re about to show you …

Season's Greetings From The PEZ-Crew!
Thursday, December 24, 2009  10:45:32 AM PT
There’s a great camaraderie here at PEZ, and although we’re scattered across the globe, the warmth of the season makes the distance a little smaller. So today the PEZ CREW has gathered to thank readers for your support, and share a few thoughts as we close the year with family and friends.

PEZ Top 12 Of '09: #8 Lance's Comeback
Thursday, December 24, 2009  9:47:13 AM PT
As our march through our Top 12 Rides of 2009 continues, we land today, on Christmas Eve, on Lance Armstrong. No matter what you may think about the Boss' comeback in 2009 - it was an amazing achievement. Three and a half years away from the sport followed by a rocky Spring, a Giro of improvement, and capped off with a podium finish in Paris - from a 38-year-old: we gotta give a tip of the hat to THAT.

PEZ Top 12 Of ’09: #9 Boonen’s Paris-Roubaix
Wednesday, December 23, 2009  12:12:29 AM PT
Tom Boonen is becoming the new “Mr. Paris-Roubaix” with his three wins he equals the greats; Eddy Merckx, Francesco Moser, Johan Museeuw, Octave Lapize, Gaston Rebry and Rik Van Looy. The man from Mol still has a way to go before overtaking Roger De Vlaeminck, but his 2009 win in Roubaix was probably his best.

PEZ Top 12 Of ’09: #10 Contador’s Tour
Tuesday, December 22, 2009  9:23:33 AM PT
We knew that Alberto Contador was the current best Grand Tour rider on the planet (ignoring Lance’s comeback) before the 2009 Tour de France. But - and I’m not belittling his previous Giro, Tour, and Vuelta wins - there were questions to be answered in 2009...and he answered them with aplomb.

PEZ Top 12 Of '09: #11 Mount Vesuvius
Monday, December 21, 2009  12:00:37 AM PT
The 2009 Giro d'Italia was one of the most amazing Grand Tours that this young writer has ever had the privilege of covering. In shear suspense, drama, fanfare, and grandiosity, it rivaled the 2003 Tour de France: and that's saying something. The racing was full-on from start to finish, but one day stands out as the perfect scene that defined the whole play: the final mountaintop finish to Mount Vesuvius.

PEZ Top 12 Of '09: #12 The Debutantes
Friday, December 18, 2009  10:20:32 AM PT
In the spririt of the 12 days of Christmas, we took our usual swipe at something slightly different - the 12 Top Rides of the 2009 Racing Season. To start this entertaining journey through the past season, we'll take a look at two young riders whose collective age doesn't reach 50: Edvald Boasson Hagen and Tyler Farrar.

Rewel Bikes: Appreciating The Un-fabulous
Thursday, December 17, 2009  9:21:02 PM PT
The sensible is often undervalued in bike reviews because very few dream of buying reasonable, we want spectacular. We want to be admired for our insightful consumerism and matching kit. Yet more often than not, a practical racing bike is a great racing bike. For over 20 years, Werner Pichler aka Rewel has been making un-fabulous custom made titanium bikes in a tiny studio near Bolzano, Italy. PEZ discovers a refreshingly different bike builder.

Vuelta 2010: A La Bar!
Thursday, December 17, 2009  9:18:44 PM PT
On Wednesday I wrote a quick review of next year's Vuelta a España from what I saw on the TV. So, sticking with tradition, I bought the Spanish sports dailies, Marca and AS, and took myself to Bar Pol-Mar in the village for a good perusal and almuerzo (mid-morning snack).

PEZ Bids Farewell: Pursuit, Points, And Madison
Tuesday, December 15, 2009  9:29:25 AM PT
The rumours have been swirling for months now: the UCI had three heads on the chopping block for the 2012 Olympics in London: the individual pursuit, the points race, and the madison. It seemed like a miserable gossip, but then, this week, the UCI announced the axing of the three. No one from PEZ has even a hundredth of the tie to the track that Ed Hood does, so it seems only appropriate for Mr. Hood to sound the death knell.

Battenkill’09: America’s Queen of the Classics, Pt.II
Sunday, December 06, 2009  12:13:00 AM PT
In Part One we went over the race itself. There’s no need to go back over that, it’ll just bring back too many painful memories for me. This time, we want to see how PEZ managed to get elbow to elbow with the fit and famous in the Battenkill Pro race.

Meet DEATHROW VELO
Monday, November 30, 2009  9:47:38 AM PT

Enter DeathRow Velo – a company as much about attitude as it is about making kit for riding and racing that has style, and makes good fiscal sense.

PEZ Books: He’s Not Heavy, He’s My Domestique
Friday, November 27, 2009  1:56:07 AM PT
The members of the pro peloton are not usually noted for their intellectual pursuits. Laurent Fignon, considered a mental heavyweight, was nicknamed “le Professeur” because he wore glasses and spent a year in a veterinarian school. For many in the past, cycling was an escape from the coal mines or steelworks, an exchange of one physical labour for another and perhaps the chance for some small recognition and enough earnings to open a bar or bike shop.

Un Secolo di Passioni: Italy And The Giro d’Italia
Wednesday, November 25, 2009  9:12:59 AM PT
2009 saw the Giro d’Italia celebrate 100 years of history. Over the course of 10 decades, newspaper journalists and more recently, television/radio/internet personnel have all shared their views on Italy’s most revered sporting event. Aldo Grasso is one such journalist, and in discussing “Un Secolo di Passioni” shared his view on Italy, bicycle racing, and the art of storytelling.

Eat To Compete: It’s Soup Time!
Thursday, November 12, 2009  6:25:55 PM PT
Soup, on many levels, is one of the best things to eat this time of year. It’s warm, it’s a great way to stay full without over-eating (when reduced intensity and mileage means a need for far fewer calories than during peak season) and they can be full of vitamin and mineral-rich vegetables. They can also taste great – like this Butternut Squash, Chorizo, and Black Bean Soup.

Rest In Peace: Dimitri De Fauw

It's easy to write an obituary when one of your heroes dies - probably more so if you don't know them well. There's just the legend, palmares, anecdotes and the sadness. But I knew Dimitri De Fauw, not well, but I worked at maybe half-a-dozen six day races where he was riding.
