PEZ Gets Muddy: USGP Weekend In New Jersey
Tuesday, November 17, 2009  11:07:33 AM PT

by Jered Gruber

Here at PEZ, we adore the mud-filled fun of the cyclocross season, but it's an all too rare event to be able to cover the racing like we do during the road season. This past weekend, ace photographer, Darrell Parks, made the trip up to New Jersey to shoot Rounds 5 and 6 of the USGP Cyclocross Series. Read on!

The Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld.com trio of Tim Johnson, Jeremy Powers, and Jamey Driscoll have taken the US cross scene by storm in 2009/2010. The only rider that seems to have the ability to deal with the three-headed green hydra has been out for the past few weeks: Ryan Trebon. Trebon crashed heavily on his head several times at the last USGP and spent the last little while trying to stop the tolling of the bells in his head.

Day ONE: US Champ Back On Top
Fast forward to this weekend - Cannondale is down a rider because Jeremy Powers is sick, Trebon is back and healthy, the remnants of Hurricane Ida are battering New Jersey = perfect day for a bike race!

Canadian National Champion, Geoff Kabush, nailed the hole shot to get the day started off right. He would eventually finish 11th.

The other half of the Kona Twin Towers, Barry Wicks, rode a solid race to take 7th.

Adam Myerson rode to 15th - he wasn't too happy with his weekend so he relaxed to Slayer on the drive home from New Jersey to Massachusetts.

The crap conditions made the technical side of cyclocross racing paramount. The pits were vital on Saturday.

Danny Summerhill finished 6th on the day and took the win in the U23 classification.

Tim Johnson and Ryan Trebon paired up and left everyone else far, far behind. Trebon in turn left Johnson behind with three lap remaining.

Once Trebon flew the coop, it was one on one: Trebon v. Johnson.

Johnson struggled valiantly, but couldn't come to terms with Trebon on a course made for Trebon's brute power and running skills.

Jamey Driscoll dug deep to ensure that two Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld.com riders made the day's podium.

Ryan Trebon took a well-deserved win on Saturday.

Trebon 1st, Johnson 2nd, Driscoll 3rd.

Trebon's win put him back on top of the USGP standings and with it came the leader's jersey.

On the women's side, Katerina Nash proved unstoppable in the atrocious conditions.

Day 1 Results
1 Ryan Trebon (KONA)
2 Timothy Johnson (Cannondale/cyclocrossworld.com)
3 Jamey Driscoll (Cannondale / CyclocrossWorld.com)
4 Christopher Jones (Team Champion System)
5 Davide Frattini (Team Fuji)
6 Daniel Summerhill (Felt-Holowesko Partners-Garmin)
7 Barry Wicks (Kona)
8 Valentin Scherz (PRO CYCLES-SCOTT-NEWWORK)
9 Zach Mcdonald (Classic Cycles)
10 Todd Wells (Specialized)

Day TWO: Johnson's Revenge
Sunday's race was the complete opposite of Saturday's rampage: sunny, warm, mostly dry. The course had dried out a fair bit leaving hardened ruts, which made for a new technical challenge. This was a course made for Johnson's technical finesse.

Davide Frattini took the hole shot on Sunday and turned it into 7th at the end of the day.

Trebon got off to a bad start, missing his pedal getting stated, then having to wade through the field to make up the lost ground.

It didn't take long for Johnson to separate himself on Sunday. This was to be a long, lonely, successful solo effort for the former World Championship podium finisher.

Whilst chasing, Trebon opted to get rid of his glasses. I wonder who the lucky winner of the flying glasses was.

The TJ Express was operating at full capacity on Sunday.

Along with Trebon, Todd Wells made his own comeback this weekend. Wells has been out since September's CrossVegas. He returned in fine fashion in New Jersey - 10th on Saturday, podium on Sunday with 3rd.

Tim Johnson wasn't distracted by offers for Doritos. Can you imagine if he had taken some? He had such a huge lead on the final lap, he very well could have. That would have been legendary.

Johnson was a bemused victor across the line.

Sunday's podium: Johnson 1st, Trebon 2nd, Wells 3rd.

Katerina Nash kept her winning ways in order with yet another victory.
