Giro Di PEZ: The Race Of The Lasts Sunday, June 07, 2009 7:50:39 AM PT

Post-Giro Roadside: This year I chased just three stages. I chose the three stages closest to home for me, in the centre of Italy, on the Adriatic side. At the end these three days, they had been the warmest days of the entire Giro; we have never had it so hot in May. Now it’s colder and those days seem so far in the past. Was it just a dream? Giro Di PEZ: Ed And Dave Look Back Friday, June 05, 2009 5:05:48 AM PT

Post-Giro Roadside: I love Scotland; but there’s no Gazzetta in the morning, most of the coffee tastes like John Wayne brewed it beside the Rio Grande and 19 million people watched the same reality TV show on Saturday night - thank God I was at the Giro. The Giro, ah, yes; where all that matters is the race - stars, water carriers, heroes and a few villains. More....

Giro di PEZ: Week 2 Outtakes! Thursday, June 04, 2009 8:11:24 AM PT

Post-Giro Roadside: Two weeks can be a long time, unless you’re chasing a Grand Tour. I flew over to cover the Giro’s second week, and crammed a trunk full of memories into my short time there – here’s a bunch that didn’t make it into my reports, but shall forever be enjoyed when I look back to 2009.

Giro Di PEZ: Wonderful Week One! Wednesday, June 03, 2009 3:39:58 AM PT

Post-Giro Roadside: The Centenary Giro has only been over for a few days, but my personal trip to the Corsa Rosa ended back on Stage 5. With two and a bit weeks back in the real world of ‘work’, that first week of fun could just as easily been last year. When The Pez asked the crew for a “Look Back” piece over our time on the race, I went digging back through the photos, notebooks and memories for a few more Giro stories that I didn’t share with you at the time. Giro Di PEZ: One Last Dance In Rome Monday, June 01, 2009 8:34:27 AM PT

Roadside St.21: You didn't make it to Roma for the final time trial? No problem, we were there for you - that's our job! For one final stage of this year's Giro, PEZ was on the ground. Let's follow Ed and Dave on one final adventure, this time through the eternal streets of Rome. Read on! More....

Giro’09 St.21: Menchov Slides To Victory! Sunday, May 31, 2009 11:09:48 AM PT

Race Report: The Centenary Giro is over and it will probably take another 100 years before they serve up a finish as exciting, heart-stopping, but ultimately as sporting as we saw today in Rome. Denis Menchov added another Grand Tour to his palmares on the rain soaked roads of Rome that saw Ignatas Konovalovas claim the fourth stage win of the race for the Cervélo Test Team. More....

Giro Di PEZ: Gilbert Saves The Giro Sunday, May 31, 2009 9:21:49 AM PT

Roadside St.20: The Rough Guide to Italy says of Naples; ‘it is filthy, it is very large and overbearing; it is crime infested and most definitely like nowhere else in Italy.’ One team DS told us; ‘this is not Italy!’ More....

Giro'09: Saturday Morning Pre-Race Chatter Saturday, May 30, 2009 12:16:30 PM PT

Roadside St.20: "Haven't you said enough about the Giro?" says Dave; "shouldn't we be out listening to what other folks have to say about this race?" Yeah, yeah - now I've got two bosses! I listened to Dave though and set about talking with as many guys as I could get my pen and pad in front of before today's stage start. More....

Giro’09 St.20: Gilbert’s Salvage Job! Saturday, May 30, 2009 10:38:31 AM PT

Race Report: Not quite the day off that usually comes at this point in a Grand Tour, but exactly what Denis Menchov expected – a slightly nervy affair as he jousts with Danilo Di Luca for the precious bonus seconds. With that pair’s eyes on the biggest prize, Silence-Lotto finally got their names on the Giro board. More....

Giro'09: Catching Up With Katusha's Ben Swift Saturday, May 30, 2009 3:55:44 AM PT

Ben Swift (Katusha & GB) was watching the Giro on TV last year at this time; now he's jousting with Cav, Ale Jet and Tyler Farrar in hairy finishes - and fighting to survive eight hour, baking mountain epics. He was the third rider to be Pezzed at the Hermitage Hotel on the second rest day. It's scary how young he looked as he settled into the chair opposite us. More....

Giro'09 St.19: Sastre Strikes Again Friday, May 29, 2009 11:11:54 AM PT

Race Report: This battle on Mount Vesuvius was to be the last chance in the 2009 Giro to knock Denis Menchov out of the race leadership. While Carlos Sastre had solo plans to take an epic solo win, the battle of Di Luca and Menchov was one for the ages. Read on! More....

Giro'09: One Last Chance Up Vesuvio Thursday, May 28, 2009 11:53:38 AM PT

Stage 19 Preview: When we went to Napoli back in April to look at the climb of Vesuvio, we only imagined and hoped for an epic showdown on the immense climb. At that point, a showdown between Danilo Di Luca and Denis Menchov wasn't possible, but here we are, the day has come, and it's time for the world to meet Mt. Vesuvius. More....

Giro’09 St.18: Scarponi Doubles Up! Thursday, May 28, 2009 10:19:35 AM PT

Race Report: The stage profile had ‘perfect for a breakway’ stamped all over it, and that’s precisely what happened. It wasn’t quite a day off in the peloton as the speed was high all the way, but with twenty-five riders eventually getting clear, it was a truce for the overall contenders. More....

Giro Di PEZ: Abruzziamo Charged Blockhaus Thursday, May 28, 2009 4:49:46 AM PT

Roadside St.17: Only four men have won here, Eddy Merckx in 1967, Franco Bitossi in 1968, Jose Manuel Fuente in 1972 and Moreno Argentin in 1984. Respectively, the greatest cyclist ever; one of the finest classics riders of his generation; a genuine climbing legend and one of the kings of the Ardennes classics. The winner here, today will be no ordinary rider and he just may win the Giro too.

Giro'09 St.17: Pellizotti Pounds Em Wednesday, May 27, 2009 11:14:43 AM PT

Race Report: In a display of beautiful climbing prowess, Franco Pellizotti reminded us that he too is in with a shot at the final step of the podium today, as he pounded his way to a huge solo win on the Block Haus climb in Danilo Di Luca's home region of the Abruzzo. The stage was Pello's, but the real action was once again from behind. More....

Giro Di PEZ: Mountains, Beaches, Rest, Pianos? Tuesday, May 26, 2009 6:22:36 PM PT

Giro Di PEZ: A Day On Home Roads For Ale Tuesday, May 26, 2009 7:17:57 AM PT

Roadside St.16: There has to be something to be said for watching a huge race rolling over your own home roads, your stomping grounds if you will. It is a pleasure known to very few of us. PEZ's Italian correspondent, Alessandro Federico, enjoyed that distinct pleasure on Monday's Stage 16 - an incredibly hot and difficult journey to the top of Monte Petrano. More....

Giro Di PEZ: On The Road To Monte Petrano Monday, May 25, 2009 2:46:54 PM PT

Roadside St. 16: Kilometre zero and the climbing starts immediately, Monte della Serra, zig-zagging into the green hills; the mercury is already at 33 degrees and with 237 kilometres, four GPM climbs and not many metres of flat road, this is one serious stage. Ed Hood is on the road and ready to go. Let's go inside the ropes of Stage 16's monster of a stage! More....

Giro'09 St.16: Sastre Slashes Off Seconds Monday, May 25, 2009 9:30:34 AM PT

Race Report: Carlos Sastre showed that his Tour de France victory might not have been a one-off as many have suspected with a stellar ride on the Monte Petrano today. Sastre showed that his climbing is nothing to be scoffed at, but on the line, his margin of victory wasn't nearly enough to rustle the feathers of Menchov and Di Luca. It could be a warning shot of what's to come though... More....

Giro Di PEZ: A Hot May Day In Romagna Monday, May 25, 2009 3:43:38 AM PT

Giro’09 St.15: Bertagnolli Solos Home! Sunday, May 24, 2009 10:43:37 AM PT

The Giro organisers land another short, sharp shocker of a stage on the riders’ plates. It’s one of those days where a contender can very easily lose the plot if they’re not totally focussed. No big mountains, but a slew of nasty little ones and not a moment flat on the 100-mile loop from Forlì to Faenza, where Mr Marco Pantani used to train. More....

Giro di PEZ: Hello Stranger! Sunday, May 24, 2009 3:21:44 AM PT

Roadside St. 14 When you start each new Giro you understand you’re a year older. You feel a stranger to the village approach and for a moment you believe it’s better to return home and proceed with your “normal” life. But it’s just a moment. The call of the road is stronger than any other. More....

Giro'09 St.14: Gerrans Takes It Atop The San Luca Saturday, May 23, 2009 11:55:23 AM PT

A break had to go the distance at some point here soon, and sure enough, the first real opportunity for a break went early today. Most were not to be seen again until the favorites had writhed their way to the top of the San Luca, high above Bologna. Cervelo's Simon Gerrans had the staying power and, well, just plain power to take the win after a tough day out front. Read on! More....

Giro’09 St.13: Cav Does Three! Friday, May 22, 2009 3:55:13 PM PT

Race Report: A relatively short and flat day greeted our riders today under sunny and warm skies, where a long day of good ol’ Joplin Ragtime piano might be forecast, right? Of course some riders well out of contention would go for a breakaway, while sprint favorites waited for their teams to reel. In the end “Cannonball Cav” stamped his authority on the sprint debate once again. Read on! More....

Giro di PEZ: Lunch With Felice Friday, May 22, 2009 9:58:01 AM PT

Roadside St. 13: It’s been 3 tough 'tappe' chasing this Giro, so today would be a chance to get ahead of the race, get some internet that worked, and get caught up. By now we all know how well my plans turn out, but my stop at the start in Lido di Camaiore was worth the inevitable delays… More....

Giro'09: Charly Wegelius Takes Us Inside The TT Thursday, May 21, 2009 4:40:27 PM PT

Giro’09 St.12: Russian To Victory! Thursday, May 21, 2009 10:49:29 AM PT

Giro'09 Preview: Stage 12's Incredible Time Trial Wednesday, May 20, 2009 2:50:35 PM PT

Much has been made about the big time trial from Sestri Levante to Riomaggiore. It's 61k, full of climbing, nary a piece of straight road: in short, it's probably the hardest time trial we've ever seen. Nobody, save the GC boys, has taken a closer look at it though. PEZ took up the reigns of responsibility, and had a closer look at what could be the most important stage of the 2009 Giro d'Italia. More....

Giro'09 St.11: King Cav Dominates The Plebeians Wednesday, May 20, 2009 10:27:05 AM PT

Milano-Sanremo's famous pass of the Passo Del Turchino loomed as a possible obstacle for a group gallop today in Arenzano, but the sprinters would not be denied one of their few opportunities in this year's Cento Anni Giro d'Italia. Mark Cavendish was once again more than up to the task. More....

Giro Di PEZ: From Two Wheels To Four Tuesday, May 19, 2009 1:08:57 PM PT

There’s a reason we take the road less travelled … although on days like this, with the F-Bomb quotient nudging up higher than an Alpine climb, I think about the other journos, comfortably staked out in the press room, enjoying the buffet lunch, tapping out reports as they watch the stage on the big screens… while I’m sitting motionless in an exhaust filled tunnel, somewhere above Genova… More....

Giro'09 St.10: The Killer Pulls Out His Bowie Knife Tuesday, May 19, 2009 10:06:24 AM PT

Today was to be the day the world turned upside down in the Giro, but the course was altered due to landslides, resulting in some of the meaty climbs being cut out. Worry not, there was still some pop out there, and PEZ was right there to cover the whole plate of pasta as Di Luca delivered a very succinct message with a crushing victory. Read on! More....

Giro di PEZ: Stage 10's Final Climb! Monday, May 18, 2009 12:08:49 PM PT

Pez Roadside: It’s rest day 1 for the racers of this Giro, but not for me… and as tired as I might feel – chasing the Giro just never gets tired. I’m in Pinerolo, and took a ride on the final climb of tomorrow’s epic stage from Cuneo… the 925m Pra Martino – and it could be decisive – if they use it. More....

|
Giro’09 St.9: High Fashion, Low Speed! Sunday, May 17, 2009 11:20:35 AM PT

I guess this could be one of the shortest race reports in history. The riders reckoned the circuit was too iffy for racing, so they made a pact to restrict the action until the last couple of laps. The sprinters’ teams kept the “race” locked down until Mark Cavendish finished things off with the stage win. More....

Giro di PEZ: To Bergamo ! Sunday, May 17, 2009 5:54:18 AM PT

Roadside St. 8 As any of the PEZ-Crew will tell you, it’s not a problem starting the day without any idea on a storyline – the problem is distilling an entire day on tour down into a readable chunk of ‘entertainment’… The PEZ has landed and here’s the proof! More....

Giro’09 St.8: Columbia Again - Now Siutsou! Saturday, May 16, 2009 10:27:32 AM PT

Race Report: Today, some thought there would be a successful long break - they were wrong! When the top riders hit the final climbs the race split to pieces and we were treated to a brilliantly timed lone win by Konstantine Siutsou for ANOTHER win by a Columbia rider! It was nail biting stuff though. More....

Giro Di PEZ: A Morning In Innsbruck Friday, May 15, 2009 11:51:41 AM PT

Roadside St.7 It's not every day, or every year, or every decade that a Grand Tour comes knocking on your front doorstep. For some reason, I drew the straw this year for that once in a lifetime opportunity: the Giro came to my town. Innsbruck, Austria is my home, and Innsbruck hosted the start of today's Stage 7. Giro’09 St.7: Boasson Hagen Splashes to Victory! Friday, May 15, 2009 10:16:20 AM PT

Race Report: Cold, wet and dangerous would probably sum-up today’s stage of the Giro d’Italia. An early break gets pulled back before the big descent to the finish and then all hell is let loose on the twisty, dodgy, descent to the finish. The cold and wet obviously suited one young Norwegian rider! More....

Giro Di PEZ: Village Life On Tour! Wednesday, May 13, 2009 1:16:27 PM PT

Roadside St. 5 With the race arriving in the mountains yesterday and making it’s way further towards the north today, there was one more chance for a PEZ Roadside report from ‘Team Week 1’ before Austrian resident Jered takes over for two stages tomorrow and then The Pez himself arrives on Saturday to guide our race coverage south through Tuscany. So, with one last chance to soak up some Giro atmosphere, it was on with the creds and down into action. More....

Giro'09 St.5: Menchov Kills The Killer Wednesday, May 13, 2009 10:01:21 AM PT

Race Report: Today the Giro staged its one and only real foray into the Dolomites. The stage was short and to the point - Alpe di Siusi. The mammoth climb had it all, a selection was made, some notables missed the boat, but for the most part, the favorites stayed close together, whilst a certain Vuelta loving Russian showed em all how it's done in the finishing sprint.

Giro'09 Preview: Stage 5 Alpe di Siusi Wednesday, May 13, 2009 10:00:12 AM PT

Since this year's Giro d'Italia starts in Venice and finishes in Rome, those famously decisive climbs of the Dolomites occur in the first week. Stage 5 finishes with a 25 kilometer, 6% climb up the Alpe di Siusi. Pez rides it (twice) and enjoys it (once). More....

Giro Di PEZ: Mountains, Here We Come! Tuesday, May 12, 2009 1:54:31 PM PT

Roadside St. 4: It was a day of changes today at the Giro. Jerseys changed hands, we left behind the flat plains and seaside of the Veneto and Friuli, and the mountains have started. After a wander around (and above!) the start in Padova, Pez hit the road and drove one of the day’s two climbs, then camped out at 1.5k to go to see who was doing it easy and who was doing it tough. Giro Di PEZ: Taking Lunch On The High Road Monday, May 11, 2009 1:41:14 PM PT

Roadside St. 3: PEZ hit the road and spent part of our day with two of the five soigneurs that Team Columbia-Highroad has here at the Giro. While they relaxed to await the arrival of a few very important customers, they told me a little bit about their work, which is a lot more involved than just serving lunch on the run to nine hungry lads. Giro’09 St.3: Ale-Jet; Stage and Pink! Monday, May 11, 2009 10:48:16 AM PT

Race Report: On a day that was to be another showdown between Super-Sprinters, Petacchi and Cavendish, it all went wrong...for one of them. The fast man from the Isle of Man got caught napping at the wrong time and didn’t see the front of the race again. Alessandro Petacchi was there to do the business and did it with lengths to spare. When you’re a sprinter, it’s all about wins, and trying to prove that it ain’t just a young man’s game. I’m not saying Alessandro Petacchi’s an old guy, but he maybe hasn’t been getting the column inches he’s due for the number of wins he’s racked up this year. He missed out at Milan-San Remo, but there’s no better time to grab the headlines than now! More....

Roadside St. 1: Venetians, or those that they adopt as their own, have throughout history had the ending of their names adorned with “etto.” Team Columbia High Road came to Lido di Venezia to ride 20.5km and climbed back on the boat with a stage win in their back pack and the first Maglia Rosa for the new king of Venice, Cavendetto. Lido Di PEZ: Walking the TTT Course Saturday, May 09, 2009 5:17:14 AM PT

Giro '09 St. 1: We all go to the cycling to see the riders but it’s the fans and the other “goings ons” that make the bike race. After a late dinner and drinks session with some old friends was followed by a sleepless night thanks to a disco over the road, a nice morning walk to have a look around the course was just what the doctor ordered. The Giro is but a day away, the previews are flowing fast and I won't say furiously. Yes, it is time for the traditional Contenders Preview. Who has a legit shot at the podium, who's a pretender, who might surprise? I'm thinking American, but not THAT American. More....

GIRO'09 Corsa: Grandissimo! Wednesday, May 06, 2009 4:44:46 AM PT
