Top Rides: PEZ Vs. La Finestre
Sunday, November 16, 2008  11:46:21 AM PT
Flashback: Over 6000 stories are logged into the PEZ database, and this soggy Sunday is a perfect time to relive some of our favorite adventures. The 2009 Giro route is under wraps until Dec. 12, but the rumored corsa has been leaked for weeks. Stage 10 could be a replay of the epic 2005 stage to Sestriere - that scaled the 18km Colle della Finestre and its unpaved pathway. It's still one of my Top Rides and here's a look back.

PEZ Travels: Costa Del PEZ!
Tuesday, November 11, 2008  6:24:07 AM PT
Spain's "Costa Blanca," a name to strike fear in the heart of the most experienced traveller. There's cheap alcohol, bargain English fried breakfasts and the 'Loch Ness disco pub' - if "Nessie" finds out that her image is being used without her permission, there'll be trouble - and God knows how many 'English' and 'Irish' bars.

E is for Heroic: The Strangely Beautiful L’Eroica
Wednesday, November 05, 2008  11:40:21 AM PT
Travel: The roads beneath your wheels are unpaved, hard packed white earth – “strade bianche’, the ride rolls before sun up, and you’re surrounded by cycling ghosts from the last century – it’s L’Eroica. In early October, Peter Easton of VeloClassic Tours led a group of guests into the cold, and into an historic time-warp.

Travel: Madonna del Ghisallo Church
Friday, October 17, 2008  12:12:56 PM PT
It's gray and raining here in Vancouver - typical fall/winter - perfect to start dreaming about next year's cycling trips! A signature climb of the Giro di Lombardia is the famous Madonna del Ghisallo church, high above Lake Como in Northern Italy. This tiny 'chiesa' is home to the Patron Saint of Cyclists, and is a must see on any trip to the region...

Top Rides: The Climb to Madonna del Ghisallo
Friday, October 17, 2008  10:04:13 AM PT
You can't fully appreciate the Race of the Falling Leaves without a closeup look at the climb to the fabled Madonna del Ghisallo church above the steep & picturesque shores of Lake Como in northern Italy. The deciding move always starts on this tough ascent, and for any fan, it's a ride you gotta do…

Top Rides: Hi Ho Heidelberg!
Friday, October 03, 2008  3:35:20 AM PT
When it comes to places to ride in Europe, central Germany usually isn't the first to come to mind. For various reasons, I've had many an opportunity to enjoy the roads near Heidelberg, Germany, and the more I see of the rest of the world, the more I can't help but be convinced that this gorgeous region has to be one of my favorites.

Varese'08: So Good They've Used It Twice!
Monday, September 22, 2008  7:35:16 AM PT
Cycling has always had its fair share of "heartlands." One area that has a well earned reputation, as a true heartland, is Varese in Italy's Lombardy region. Situated between Lake Como & Lake Maggiore in the beautiful area northwest of Milan, it has been home to some of the sport's greatest riders alongside some of its classiest races for the best part of a century.

Top Rides: Suffering in the Black Forest
Sunday, August 17, 2008  10:37:02 AM PT
An epic day of rain, pain, and suffering is now behind me, and I’ve got the lactic acid as proof after suffering through a super-tough, 3-climb stage of the 2005 Giant Tour. Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen called today’s action…

PEZ Climbs Mont Ventoux (x 3)
Wednesday, August 13, 2008  9:36:33 AM PT
We've reported on the ascent of this fabled mountain a few times, and even climbed it ourselves, but never have we indulged in the personal suffering that precedes acceptance into the elite club of climbing Mt. Ventoux three times in one day...until now.

Travel: Coast to Coast in Costa Rica
Thursday, June 19, 2008  11:54:11 AM PT
Just because we talk so much about riding in Europe doesn’t mean we should ignore the rest of the planet, especially where the cycling is world class. CycleVentures offers guided cycling trips around the world – including their new "Two Oceans" crossing of Costa Rica from the Pacific to the Carribean.

PEZ Rides The Marmolada & Pordoi!
Tuesday, May 27, 2008  11:04:20 AM PT
This final week of the Giro is proving a brute, with two more hard mountain days still ahead. But stage 15 from Arabba to the Passo Fedaia was sheer torture - with 5 huge climbs and a summit finish. In 2006 I rode the Fedaia and Pordoi passes, take a look...

Top Rides: Brasstown Bald
Friday, April 25, 2008  8:32:33 AM PT
In 2006 I had the good fortune/ misfortune to ride the Tour de Georgia Stage 5 route from Helen to Brasstown Bald - the highest point in Georgia. I’d heard this climb was tough, but really had no idea what I was getting into. When this sucker pitches to 20%, the ol’ pain-o-meter goes off the scale…

Top Rides: PEZ Vs The Mur de Huy
Tuesday, April 22, 2008  12:14:27 PM PT
The thing about the Flèche Wallonne parcours that surprised me most was just how hard this 200km ‘semi-Classic’ is. There’s nothing ‘semi’ about it… This hard course deserves the prime time and throws up 11 rated climbs, including 3 passes over a 1300 meter brute called the Mur. Here’s how it happened to me…

Top Rides: Barcelona

The masterpieces of Gaudi. Tapas galore. And all those brown-eyed girls…ahem, women. (Men, too, my wife tells me.)
