The Angel Flies
Angel Vicioso holds his good form, a week after winning the G.P. Miguel Indurain he takes the Klasika Primavera de Amorebieta from a fast moving group of 12 riders, over a minute in front of the bunch, out sprinting the two Etxebarrias of Euskatel, Unai (VEN) 2nd & David (SPA) 3rd. The Klasika (182 kms) was run in bad weather conditions in the Basque country. CSC-Tiscali rider Paco Cerezo provided the entertainment by ecaping at the 20 km mark and riding solo for 119 kilometres and acheiving a maximum lead of 6 minutes 25 seconds, although he failed to finish.
Casero Still Out
Angel Casero may not now be riding the Giro de Italia because of the continuing problems with his right knee. The Valencian did not ride the Tour of Pais Vasco, and during the G.P. Indurain his knee was bothering him. Casero has put himself in the hands of a specialist who recomends some days without competition and treatment with cold & ultrasound.
Laurent Jalabert, the Frenchman in the Danish CSC who abandoned Milan-San Remo because of a viral infection, returnes to the action on the 24th of April in the tour of lower Saxony in Germany. He prefered to prepare with this race than ride the classics, as it would be much better preparation for the Tour de France. Ex world champion Roman Vainsteins will debut in the Giro del Trentino. Scottish rider David Millar (Cofidis) was going to ride the Circuit de la Sarthe, last week, but will now start in the Tour of Aragon and probably the Tour of the Vendee. He was diagnosed with glandular fever in January & has had a sore throat.
The team of Mario Cipollini, Aqua & Sapone are considering takeing leagal action against the oranisers of Paris-Roubaix, Society of the Tour de France, as they would only allow the team to ride if the boss (Cipollini) would start. The manager of the team, Vicenzino Salutini said it was ґґbad formґґ on the part of the organisers & felt they were being discriminated against.
Mobilvetta will replace ONCE in the 2002 Giro de Italia, ONCE left the place vacant when they rejected there invitation because the Giro will not be shown on Spanish TV. The Danish team CSC this week confimed that 4 Spanish riders will start for them in this the 85th Giro, they are Carlos Sastre, Francisco Corezo, Marcelino Garcia & Manuel Calvente.
