October 2015: ErgVideo 4 kicks off, and a new ErgVideo featuring Scott Moninger
We’ve been really busy here at HQ. The ErgVideo 4 beta trial has gone magnificently, with plenty of people eager to try out the new capabilities. In-between running down bugs and issuing updates, we’ve managed to produce the first in a new series of videos developed with the Peaks Coaching Group, featuring master coaches Scott Moninger and Tim Cusick.

Plenty of testers tried it out and most were surprised at how “finished” it was. Well, like I said last month, I wouldn’t have put it out for such a wide trial if I wasn’t confident you’d have few troubles and your important training wouldn’t be interrupted. Many thanks to the people who readily fed-back great information and helped me squish the last few bugs and niggly things.
A good number of ErgVideo customers have switched to the Wahoo Kickr™ or Snap™ and they rather jumped at the chance to return to their ErgVideos after a bit of a dry spell. I’m happy to oblige. I’m really glad to hear from you again, and that you continue to be impressed by ErgVideo’s outstanding quality. Keeping-up that standard is a thing we’re committed to.
I’ll run-down some of the new features in ErgVideo 4 later in this newsletter, but first I’d like to tell you about a brand new ErgVideo that’s available now!
Peaks Coaching Group power-training series featuring Scott Moninger #1: FRC Intervals
Our collaboration with the Peaks Coaching Group continues, and this time we’re thrilled to feature the legendary Scott Moninger, riding the same roads he trained on during much of his 17-year pro career. We’d been planning a shoot in Pennsylvania in autumn, but when circumstances arose that had three PCG coaches (one being Scott), Tim Cusick and Kathy Watts all in Boulder, Colorado at once, I hopped on a plane with my usual tons of equipment, computers, cameras, and hopes for great weather. My wishes were granted, and we managed to shoot a whole series of ErgVideos comprising specific training sessions to improve your climbing ability. Scott’s pro palmares are filled with climbing victories; for example, he’s won the Mount Evans Hill Climb 6 times! Boulder is a pretty cool place, with plenty of access to mountains as well as flat, wind-swept plains. It has amazing bike infrastucture and a biker culture that’s unmatched in North America. Everyone should ride there at least
once. If you can’t visit, try these ErgVideos instead!
Our first release in the series is called “Functional Reserve Capacity Intervals”, and it’s available now on the website. FRC quantifies that energy and ability you need to repeatedly attack your opponents, open some distance, and breakaway for good. In this ErgVideo, you build it through 40/20second intervals, over and over again. It has four sets at different levels and durations, and you can easily use the ride designer to add sets to your sessions. After that, there’s a really smooth 20 minute sweet-spot interval to the top of the hill with Tim and Scott. We’ve put together a good number of workout variations for this video, so you can use it extensively in your training. The sun shines, the traffic is light, and the riders couldn’t be smoother. Oh, yeah, the FRC intervals…they’re hard, but you ought to expect that. This ErgVideo is available in spectacular and smooth 1080p

We’ll have a few more ErgVideos in this new series coming soon. Now I turn to a short intro to new features in ErgVideo 4.
ErgVideo 4 new features and capabilities

The most obvious new feature in ErgVideo 4 is the support of the Wahoo Kickr™ and Snap™ trainers. Since these are ANT+™ wireless devices, it certainly made sense to integrate capability to read the full complement of bicycle-oriented ANT+™ sensors, like heart rate monitors, speed, cadence, speed+cadence, as well as power meter sensors into ErgVideo. Look for markings HR, SPD, CAD, S&C and PWR on your device’s compatibility info. You can pick and choose the source of your on-screen information to show data from any of these sensors. For example, this relieves you from trying to connect the wired CompuTrainer cadence sensor and lets you use the ANT+ cadence sensor you already have on your bike. All you need is a single, 8-channel (or more) ANT+ usb adapter stick. See our page on ANT+ here.
We’ve tackled the problem of discovering and assigning wireless devices that may be present in home-user cases all the way up to the dense multirider studio case, with a simple, graphical drag-and-drop interface. There’s no need to “register” by sitting closest to the PC for a few minutes; There are no pop-ups getting in your way; It’s dead-simple to identify “who’s speed sensor is THIS” and “who’s power sensor is THAT?”. If your sensor is “in range”, it shows up, and you see its data right away. At the same time we even managed to improve and make more intuitive the connection of wired devices like CompuTrainers and VeloTrons.
We present a UI that allows you to arrange stations in the same way you have laid them out in your studio. You drag and drop discovered trainers, people, and their personal devices. ANT+ devices are remembered for each rider, so when they arrive the “who’s here” list simplifies and speeds setup for each session.
It’s usual in the studio environment to configure different riders on different stations for each session. Not so at home!
Typically our users ride the same bike, on the same trainer, with the same sensors everytime. Many park their bike on the trainer all winter long. It was really important to us to preserve the “two clicks and I’m riding” aspect of ErgVideo. Once you have configured your home station, you won’t be bothered or interrupted to reconfigure every time you start ErgVideo. Only when something new is detected, or some sensor is not reporting will you be reminded to go find (for example) your HR monitor and put it on before proceeding to the ride phase.
We’ve minimized changes elsewhere in the product, because we know you like our simple and streamlined approach. We hope you’ll watch the video rather than be distracted from the action by data display and numbers. The data can be moved out of the way, scaled, and placed wherever you want it. Since the Wahoo devices do not have handlebar controller buttons, we provide new on-screen buttons to increase/decrease the threshold setting, as well as trigger the spin-down calibration. They work with the mouse or touch if you have a touch screen.
We keep configuration settings to a minimum, for simplicity. One change that was met with applause from beta testers was the default output to the .FIT format, with options to output the legacy .txt format as well. Now it’s easy to upload your ErgVideo performance files to online services.

Please review the help videos especially if you encounter something that you can’t quite figure out by just experimenting with the new software and its user interface.
