Esteban Chaves second in the final classification. Blue jersey goes to Mikel Nieve.
This Giro will rightly be remembered for the impressive feat by the Shark Vincenzo Nibali, but Sidi Sport also left its mark on the 2016 edition of the Corsa Rosa. In fact, all the major mountain stages in the Giro d’Italia were won by champions from the Sidi family.
Sidi won the 13th stage from Palmanova to Cividale del Friuli, with Spaniard Mikel Nieve (Team Sky). In the end Mikel Nieve also managed to capture the blue jersey, which distinguishes the best climber in the Giro.
Sidi also sealed the 14th stage from Alpago to Corvara, the major Dolomite stage in the Giro that covered 210 km and 6 GPMs, with Esteban Chaves (Orica-GreenEDGE) taking the win and going on to wear the maglia rosa for a day, having to surrender it only to the superlative Vincenzo Nibali. As things turned out, Chaves, a humble and friendly champion, took second place on the final podium of the Giro, which is worth a lot, especially because it launches the young Colombian climber as one of the major players of the future in three week stage races.
Finally, the last major Alpine stage in the Giro, from Guillestre to Sant’Anna di Vinadio, was clinched by Rein Taaramae, the first Estonian in history to win a stage in the Giro. Let us point out that Taaramae rides for Team Katusha, one of the Sidi squadrons on which all the riders use Sidi Wire shoes. He dedicated his victory to his unfortunate team mate, Ilnur Zakarin, who was forced to withdraw from the race after a fall on the Colle dell’Agnello.
In all this, however, don’t forget the two brilliant and important victories captured in the last week of the Giro by Roger Kluge (IAM Cycling) at Cassano d’Adda and by Matteo Trentin (Etixx – Quick-Step) at Pinerolo.
It was a Giro d’Italia where Sidi Sport played a major role with their Sidi Wire shoes, which once again have proven to be the top models in the Sidi brand road racing collection. Giro d’Italia, Wire Carbon is in the pink…
