California’18 Stage 1: Sprint King Gaviria!

PeloPics: Fernando Gaviria (Quick-Step Floors) outsprinted the world-class line-up that included World Champion Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe), Marcel Kittel (Katusha-Alpecin) and Mark Cavendish (Dimension Data) in Long Beach to open the 2018 Tour of California. The Young Australian sprinter Caleb Ewan of Mitchelton-Scott took the second place. Sagan, who claimed second place on last year’s opening stage, ended the day in third place.

Stage winner and overall leader, Fernando Gaviria (Quick-Step Floors): “The team was perfect, controlling the breakaway and keeping me all the time protected near the front of the bunch. My legs felt strong today and I couldn’t have asked for more from this opening stage. Winning my first ever race in the United States is really great, the cherry on the top being the yellow jersey which I now get to sport on Monday”
