In the latest edition of our column about real fans with real bikes, Readers’ Rigs has travelled down under, tracking down two PEZ fans from different parts of the lucky country with two very different rides. A full carbon Colnago and an aluminium Duratec – it’s Readers’ Rigs time!

Paul’s pride and joy, a 2010 Colnago EPS
When did you buy it? I bought it in January 2011 from a friend of a friend, it was around 10 months old and it had only done around 5000 kilometers.
What made you choose this bike? I have always been envious of a few of my mates that have Colnagos, I think they are one of the best looking bikes around and the reputation of quality and performance they have has certainly been confirmed with me since I have owned one.
What modifications/additions have you done? The only changes I have made since owning my EPS is changing the Deda stem it came with, to a set of FSA force shallow drop bars and matching stem.
What components are you running? Only the best! Campy 11 speed Super Record as a full group set, FSA force stem and shallow drop and reach bars with Pro logo double touch bar very nicely wrapped by Hampton Cycles, Look Keo pedals, Pro Logo Scratch Nack saddle, for wheels I have a choice of Fulcrum racing zero’s with ceramic bearings, or Zipp Firecrest clinchers, although the Zipps seem to be on most of the time at the moment.
How many miles/kilometers do you do a year? Around 10000-11000 K’s a year, I average 4-5 rides a week in the warmer months and 2-3 a week during the winter months although not as much this year.
Favorite riding area? I live in bayside Melbourne so the infamous Beach Road is just over one kilometer from home and although some will tell you they avoid it, everyone in Melbourne does ride it! I ride with the CTXC bunch out of Hampton and we ride from Hampton to areas of the Mornington Peninsula including Frankston, Two Bays Road, Bentons Road and Balcombe Hill in Mt Martha. My other favorite ride is usually by myself to the Kew Boulevard or North from home to Port Melbourne.
Favorite riding experience on your bike? Visiting Adelaide in late January to see the Tour Down Under is amazing, this city comes alive and the atmosphere is incredible, it is low key compared to the races in Europe and based out of the city so easy to follow and the pros are happy to mix with the fans. As it is a quieter city than my home town Melbourne and with the locals being very tolerant of cyclists taking over for a few days, there is some of the best riding to be had in all of Australia and all very close to the city.

Last words? I love the simplicity of just getting out and riding my bike. When alone it clears your head and can give you time to think, or out with your mates having a chat, that is until the hammer comes down! Sometimes you’re out riding and next to you is Baden Cooke, Matty Lloyd or perhaps a TDF stage winner, a yellow jersey winner or possibly a World Champ, what other sport can boost that?

When did you buy it? I bought this bike complete second hand from a good friend of mine when he changed over to a carbon bike in 2011.
What made you choose this bike? Got to love a bargain! At $2000 with the Chris King Wheelset and knowing how many K’s it had done and that it had been well looked after it was an easy choice. The original plan was to have this as a training bike and build up a new Duratec Cult carbon frame as a race bike. Unfortunately I recently broke my leg in a crash at a local criterium so I may have some trouble getting that plan passed my misses! After the crash I had the bike checked out and the only damage was a scuffed pedal and a crooked lever.
What Modifications/Additions have you done? First change was back to an SLR saddle – The fizik was too soft for me. The Zero G Brakes were next as the Chorus felt ordinary after coming off my old bike running previous Zero G (04) brakes. It came with 177.5 Cranks which took a while to adapt too but I have just recently gone back to 175’s as the left bearing went in them. The 177.5’s have just had ceramics put back in them, but I may keep these now for a specific TT bike build….
The best pick up was Jiri Jezek’s (World and Paralympic Champion who was interviewed on Pez back in 2007 here) old training wheels.
What components are you running? A mix of Campy chorus & record groupsets plus the aforementioned Zero Gravity g Brakes. Seat post and Bars are Pells aero, have been using these bars for about six years, not an ideal sprinting bar because the flats hit your wrists when sprinting hard but feel awesome when climbing and when driving on the flat. The Fulcrums are shimano body, running Sram RED powerdome which surprisingly runs very smooth with my Chorus Derailleur and CKT chain!
How many kilometers/miles per year? Strava has me down for 11500 k so far this year and 113000 m of climbing (have to love Strava climbing challenges). I try and ride/race 5-6 times a week.

Favorite Riding Area? The Gold Coast is a great place for riding with plenty of loops ranging from 60-200 k through some amazing countryside. I also enjoy riding new areas when traveling around Australia. A lot of Pros come over for our summer break and it’s great to ride with these guys on their “relaxation rides” and try not to get dropped!
Favorite riding experience? This was actually a 120km race from Grafton to Coffs Harbour in New South Wales a few years back. Unfortunately the local council has made it too difficult to hold this race any more.
Future Upgrades? Nothing too exciting apart from the usual chain/cassette change I guess. I though have just been upgraded with some stainless pins and screws in my leg from this last crash!
Last words? I can see myself holding onto this bike for quite awhile yet. The aluminium frame combined with fulcrums equals a downhill demon and it still climbs quite well compared to other bikes. I currently also have a Duratec Sprinter Track Bike and a Merida 3000D Mountain Bike but I think I still need that TT bike….
