TOP STORY: DS Steels: “Jakobsen will have a lot of fun with Cavendish when he comes back”
Sports director Tom Steels expects Deceuninck – Quick-Step to enjoy Mark Cavendish a lot. As a mentor, the Brit can teach the sprinters within the team a lot about the profession. “His specific view on sprinting can help guys like Bennett or Hodeg. When Jakobsen returns, he will also enjoy it.”
Steels hopes that Cavendish, in addition to his experience, can also be an added value for the Belgian WorldTour team. “Of course it is no longer the Cavendish of the past. He’s had a few bad years,” he told Sporza. “His switch is therefore a challenge.”
“In terms of sports, we will have to rebuild step by step. I think the first thing we need to do is make sure he can enjoy racing again, but we also want to give him the feeling that he is physically back to normal again. If he feels good on the bike, we can watch the sprints again. I have no doubt he still has the ability to win races. But fun on the road is the first priority.”
Cavendish, who has won thirty stage victories in the Tour de France, will probably no longer be the leader. In other races, the Brit can still hope for opportunities. “We don’t expect Mark to win six stages in the Tour. There are many other races to get up to speed. Then we have an extra sprinter, which gives us more opportunities.”
In any case, Steels is looking forward to the new collaboration. “Everyone is looking forward to it. Mark is someone who has always been good to his colleagues. It can be explosive after the race, but very sweet an hour later. Because of his personality he will always contribute something.”
Patrick Lefevere decided on Friday to bring Cavendish back into the team. “I last saw him in De Panne and then he was really distraught. We kept in touch and I finally decided yesterday to hire him,” Lefevere said in Het Laatste Nieuws.
“If it fails, it won’t be my fault, as he has barely surfaced in three years. But I also have the heart in the right place, if I say so myself. That’s why I do it.”

De Schorre Boom – SuperPrestige Men’s Cyclocross 2020
Eli Iserbyt won Boom’s very tough Superprestige cyclocross on Sunday. The European champion rode away from the competition two laps from the finish. Michael Vanthourenhout provided a one-two punch for Pauwels Sauces-Bingoal. Toon Aerts kept Wout van Aert behind him in the battle for third place.
Toon Aerts had the best start of the bunch. He started the second lap with a small lead over Michael Vanthourenhout, Eli Iserbyt and Corné van Kessel. Wout van Aert had a difficult start, but he moved up to the top ten in the second lap. Due to a strong ride in the hilly zone, Van Aert was able to join the leading group one lap later, putting five strong men off the front.
On the fourth lap it was the Jumbo-Visma rider who put the pressure on and Van Kessel in particular had difficulty keeping up with that pace. On the sixth of nine laps, Aerts took over command, putting Iserbyt, Van Aert and Vanthourenhout on the defensive. Yet the four came together again. Iserbyt didn’t like it and went on the attack.
The European champion started the penultimate lap with a lead of 11 seconds and he had teammate Vanthourenhout behind him, and he managed to shake off Van Aert and the fallen Aerts. Although, the differences were manageable. Iserbyt saw his lead shrink a bit in the final lap, but he managed the win solo.
Race winner, Eli Iserbyt (Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal): “I don’t think I could do this last year. I was surprised that I was suddenly gone, but I also knew it was difficult to close gaps. Previous attacks did not give much lead. I also didn’t think anyone really rode away on the uphill stretches. I felt it enormously, but I was lucky that I did a little less than the rest in the initial phase. Maybe because I rode economically at the beginning, that helped me in the end. I also knew that if I had a gap somewhere, I could stay ahead. That happened when we turned with two laps to go. It was very tricky uphill, because your rear wheel spun completely. It was really a Toon and Wout lap, so I am happy to win here. Now I could never make my mark uphill. It was really about pace and not about those short ramps. Today I went for the win and we will look at the standings in the last races. I know from last year’s World Cup that I shouldn’t think it’s finished too soon.”
4th, Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma): “Fourth place is where I belong. I didn’t have a good feeling today, that’s a pity. I missed my start completely and when I took the initiative at the front, I was trying, but it is what it is. In the final I had nothing left. He (Iserbyt) already had a few metres and then Toon slid down and I a little further. Eli, if he has a gap, can very quickly build a nice gap, which has been used again today. I must be happy with it, this is the best result possible. My legs did not feel good. It may have looked good, but it was no better than last week. My form is as expected. After last week it was perhaps too optimistic, but in the final those guys were seriously better today. It was real cross and you could see that I had nothing extra, I couldn’t get through. If you have better condition, you have more left and make fewer mistakes. Usually that is not coincidental, because when you are under pressure you are more likely to make a mistake. It is not the intention to stay good (at his training camp in Spain this week), I will train to get better. The intention is to be really good during the Christmas period and we will work on that now.”

De Schorre Boom – SuperPrestige Women’s Cyclocross 2020
Lucinda Brand won the Superprestige cyclocross in Boom on Sunday. The Telenet-Baloise rider attacked in the penultimate lap to hold off Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado, who finished second. Denise Betsema was third at 45 seconds.
The hilly course immediately split the race on the first lap. Lucinda Brand, Denise Betsema and Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado were soon off the front, followed by Annemarie Worst and Puck Pieterse. Betsema tried to ride away through the sand, but the three stayed together.
World champion Alvarado started the third lap with a minimal lead. That happened after a small slip from Brand, who immediately went in pursuit of her major competitor. She caught her a lap later, for the two to fight for the win. Betsema couldn’t hold the pace, but was well ahead of Worst, Kastelijn and Pieterse. On the hilly section of the penultimate lap Brand took a gap on Alvarado. The leader of Telenet-Baloise managed to increase that lead little by little. At the start of the last lap, however, the World champion had reduced the difference to 6 seconds, but the lead was 10 seconds by the line due to the uphill section.
Race winner, Lucinda Brand (Telenet Baloise Lions): “It was an unpleasant combination of circumstances. We went into the pits together and I didn’t know where her mechanics were. But they were close to mine, so I made a choice what to do. That was the wrong choice. It was absolutely not the intention to crash anyone. At that moment I had no choice, because I had to change in the pit zone. So all I could do after that was to wait for Ceylin. I also apologised then, because you don’t want to eliminate a competitor that way. I hope people don’t think I wanted to. If it costs me a fine, then I understand that. There are rules, I don’t know all of them by heart, but I take them for granted. At that moment you have a high heart rate and I made this choice, I cannot turn it back. I can understand that it is just as annoying when it happens to you. I think she assumes I didn’t do it on purpose and I told her personally. I noticed that I was a bit stronger on the climbs. But Ceylin was excellent in the descents, so it was very difficult to escape. Fortunately it worked out in the final and I was able to keep that difference.”
2nd, Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado (Alpecin-Fenix): “Lucinda went up the climbs much faster at the end than in the first half of the cross. She also rode faster than me there. In that area I still fall short of her. It also happened in those climbing parts. After that I kept the difference as small as possible, but I couldn’t get back. In general the flatter parts are in my favour, but I didn’t have as much energy in the final as in the beginning.”
3rd, Denise Betsema (Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal): “It’s important to have a good day here in Boom, and this was not my best day of the season. I think I can be very happy with a third place in this very tough race. This course is actually the same everywhere. There are very few recovery parts, so good legs are very important. It came out of my toes today, so I am happy to be on the podium.”

Sunweb Becomes Team DSM
Pro cycling’s newest elite team unveiled – Team DSM
Team Sunweb announced on Friday a lead strategic partnership with Royal DSM, the science behind global health, nutrition and sustainable living, that will see the team transformed into Team DSM for the 2021 season onwards.
Fresh from winning multiple stages of the Tour de France and dominating the podium of the Giro d’Italia in 2020, one of the top ranked and most exciting young teams in professional road cycling will be known as Team DSM from 1st January 2021.

Cycling team Wanty Gobert and the 78 Belgian Intermarchés are proud to announce the signature of a partnership until 2023. Primoz Roglič wins Vélo d’Or 2020
Primož Roglič won the Vélo d’Or 2020. It is the first time the Slovenian from the Jumbo-Visma team has won the prestigious prize. Roglič won the Vuelta a España and Liège-Bastogne-Liège last season. He also finished second in the Tour de France.
The Vélo d’Or is the annual prize of the French cycling magazine Vélo Magazine, which is associated with the Tour de France organisation and the sports newspaper L’Equipe. A number of international cycling journalists choose the best cyclist of the year here.
Roglič is the successor to Julian Alaphilippe, who won the prize last year. Alejandro Valverde and Chris Froome had this honour in the previous two years. “I’ve gone through the list of previous winners and it’s a great reward,” Roglič says. “I take this opportunity to say a big thank you to the people who voted for me. I understood that it was a jury of journalists from all over the world, and that’s why it really affects me.”
Among the fifteen nominees for the Vélo d’Or were also Mathieu van der Poel, Anna van der Breggen, Wout van Aert and Remco Evenepoel. Besides Roglič, world champion Alaphilippe also received recognition. He won the Vélo d’Or for best French cyclist. The full results of the Vélo d’Or election will be announced at a later date.
Julian Alaphilippe Wins the Vélo d’Or Français
It’s for the second consecutive year that our rider receives the prestigious award.
The Vélo d’Or Français trophy is a well-deserved reward for Julian Alaphilippe, who in the month of September became first Frenchman in 23 years to triumph at the World Road Race Championships. A pre-race favourite in Imola, Alaphilippe attacked from an elite group with 13 kilometres to go just as the gradient was beginning to bite on the toughest climb of the race, dispatched all his opponents and soloed to a career-defining victory.
Apart from that memorable success, Deceuninck – Quick-Step’s rider enjoyed another solid Tour de France – claiming stage 2 in Nice after a trademark attack backed up by a powerful sprint on the Promenade des Anglais and wearing the iconic yellow jersey for three days in a row – and won Brabantse Pijl, just his second race since conquering the rainbow stripes.
“Winning the Vélo d’Or Français makes me very happy, it’s nice to see that my results didn’t go unnoticed and I was again named best French rider of the year, thus getting another trophy. This season has been a special and different one, with plenty of challenges, but I managed to achieve many of my goals and I can be satisfied with what I did, the world title I won in Italy being, of course, the cherry on the top.”
“The rainbow jersey is the most beautiful in the world and wearing it in a few races before the season ended made me realise what a huge honour it is to have it. This gives me a lot of motivation for next year. I can’t wait to be in action with my Deceuninck – Quick-Step teammates and fight for some more nice results,” added Julian Alaphilippe.
Simon Yates Prepares for a Fight with Brother Adam
Simon and Adam Yates seemed to be inseparable, but in 2021 the British brothers will race for different teams. Simon will wear the Mitchelton-Scott kit, while Adam will race in a INEOS Grenadiers jersey. “It will be very interesting,” said Simon in conversation with Tuttobiciweb.
Simon Yates: “It will be very interesting after all these years together at Mitchelton-Scott. However, it is not the first time that we race as rivals, because we already did that before our pro adventure. I see it as an exciting challenge as we are comparable riders.”
“I don’t know which races he will compete next year,” said Simon. “We may not bump into each other often, but it may also be that we will be fighting out duels all season long. We will see.” The winner of the Vuelta a España 2018 will first have to map out a program with the team management of Mitchelton-Scott.
“We already have a number of ideas, but we have not set up a calendar yet. I am still waiting for the presentation of several matches. We already know the Tour course, but I also want to wait for the announcement of the Giro d’Italia in particular. I first want to map everything out and then make a decision.”
One thing is certain, Simon Yates hopes to participate in the Olympic Games in Tokyo next summer. “I am really passionate about the Games. It’s a big goal and also the reason why I can’t yet unfold a definitive program for 2021. There are only four places for Tokyo, but I hope to be there.”

No Three leaders for Movistar in the Tour de France
Opposite to previous press releases, Movistar will not start in the Tour de France next season with three leaders. It is said that Enric Mas and newcomer Miguel Ángel López share the lead in the French stage race.
The regional newspaper Diario de Navarra reports the strategy of the Spanish team of Eusebio Unzué. Mas raced last season in both the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España to fifth place in the final classification also the jersey for the best young rider. López is coming over from Astana this winter, he finished sixth in the Tour last season and also won a stage.
It seems that Alejandro Valverde is missing from the Tour after nine participations in a row. In principle, the Vuelta a España will be his only Grand Tour in 2021, possibly his last season as a pro. The 40-year-old Spaniard, who finished 12th in the Tour and 10th in the Vuelta, is likely to ride a mainly Spanish program. He will probably ride the Olympic Games road race in Tokyo.
The leadership in the Giro d’Italia falls to Marc Soler, which was the plan for 2020, but those plans eventually changed. The Spanish rider first rode the Tour, where he finished 21st, and then the Vuelta, where he won the stage to Lekunberri.

Tom Pidcock will Not Ride a Grand Tour Until 2022 at the Earliest
Tom Pidcock shone on the road with the U23 riders, but the 21-year-old Brit will make his debut as a WorldTour rider next year. The all-rounder spoke with Het Nieuwsblad about his debut year for INEOS Grenadiers.
Pidcock, this year’s winner of the U23 Giro d’Italia, doesn’t want to go too fast and has postponed his Grand Tour debut for a while. “I will not do a Grand Tour until 2022 at the earliest. I don’t know yet whether I can become a GC rider or rather a stage winner, but I do realise that climbing is the best for me.”
Pidcock will not be at the start of Paris-Roubaix in 2021, but Strade Bianche is on his list. “I like to race on gravel and the race is only 180 kilometres long. That should still work.” He will ignore the Flemish classics. “I should start in the Ardennes classics.”
Pidcock is mainly concerned with the Tokyo Olympics. He’s aiming at a good ride in the cross country mountain bike race. But first, the British rider will finish a cyclocross program this winter. He started his season in the World Cup series in Tábor, Czech Republic, last weekend.
Pidcock aimed for a place in the top ten, but only finished 17th. “A disappointment, but I quickly felt that a top 10 place was impossible. I should have known better. I saw on TV that the level on the Koppenberg and in Niel was very high. I’m also not at top fitness yet. I can only compete for the top 5 and the podium within two weeks.”
Pascal Ackermann To Target the Tour de France
Pascal Ackermann has already been successful in the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España, but is still waiting for his debut in the Tour de France. The 26-year-old German is fully focused on the Tour of 2021, according to the SWR website.
Ackermann was the first to cross the line eight times this year. The sprinter started with a win in the Clásica de Almería in February, followed by a stage victory in the UAE Tour. After the corona break, Ackermann won two stages in the Sibiu Cycling Tour and was twice winner in Tirreno-Adriatico. The German also managed two stage victories in his Vuelta debut. In Aguilar de Campoo the declassification of the initial stage winner, Sam Bennett gave him the win. In the final stage to Madrid, Ackermann beat his Irish opponent.
Will Ackermann go to the Tour de France as the absolute sprint leader? BORA-hansgrohe also has Peter Sagan. The Slovak has already won the green jersey seven times, but this year unable to take a stage victory.
Nairo Quintana to Return in the Tour Colombia
Nairo Quintana is still recovering from a serious knee injury, but the Arkéa-Samsic rider is hoping to return in February during the Tour Colombia. “It remains to be seen how good I will be, but I will certainly be at the start,” said Quintana.
The 30-year-old rider spoke with Antena 2. “The Tour Colombia is coming and I will be there, although I cannot estimate how my form will be by then.” Quintana had an operation on his left knee at the end of October, as he was riding around with severe knee pain after the corona break. This was the result of an accident during the summer in Colombia, when he was hit by a car during training. Quintana seemed to have little trouble with his knee in the Tour de l’Ain, but in the Critérium du Dauphiné and the Tour de France the left knee continued to trouble him. He managed to finish the Tour, but did so with a fracture in the kneecap.
After the operation, Colombian sports doctor Gustavo Castro spoke of a healing process of four to eight months. Quintana hopes to return to the pack four months after surgery. According to Lé Telegramme, Quintana will miss the first Arkéa-Samsic training camp between 14 and 22 December in Cannes.

Matteo Trentin: “It’s unbelievable that barriers are being cut back”
The UCI announced this week that several measures are being prepared to improve the safety of the riders. CCC rider, Matteo Trentin was also present at those conversations.
Trentin has attended several meetings in recent months where safety on the race course was discussed. “Especially after the events in the Tour of Poland,” the rider told TuttoBICI. “We had two introductory meetings, three conversations then dealt with a particular topic and finally, last Thursday, what had been discussed was presented.”
In the discussions, Trentin sat at the table with the UCI and race organisers. All critical points were discussed. “The organisers also raised their concerns. We started a dialogue because no one wants to point the finger and judge. I can’t believe organisers are cutting back on crowd barriers, knowing we could get hurt. But there are more problems.”
The process to make the races safer takes some time, the Italian admits. “But as riders we are heard and we have managed to change some important rules to avoid accidents. We have asked for safer barriers, because they should not only be seen as a separation between us and the public, but the design also has to take into account that riders can hit them.”
According to Trentin, riders must be protected as in skiing or skating. “That’s where pillows take the blows. We have asked for new, permanent rules, without having to change them again.” The motorcycles and cars have also been discussed. “When it comes to safety, you have to look 360 degrees around you and involve everything. So we also talked about improper behaviour, which should not be tolerated. And we as riders also make mistakes.”
Chaves to Probably Combine Giro and Olympic Games
Mitchelton-Scott has not yet sat down with Esteban Chaves to discuss plans for 2021, but if it is up to the Colombian, he will ride the Giro d’Italia and the Olympics.
In conversation with TuttiBiciWeb, Chaves clearly hints his preferences. “I love Italy and the Giro, so I hope for a suitable course. I wait patiently for the announcement of the Giro. The Olympics is another dream of mine. It was one of my goals in 2020 and I don’t see why that would change next year.”
What is certain is that Chaves will again be at the start of the Tour of Colombia in 2021. “For that I will also go to Valencia on a training camp. I hope it will be a very consistent season for me.”
The second placed in the Giro d’Italia of 2016 has sometimes lacked that consistency in recent seasons. In the last Vuelta a España, the 30-year-old Colombian lost a good GC place after a few bad days.
Lotto Soudal to have Three Separate Training Bubbles
Lotto Soudal will be in Spain in January for a training camp, but will do so in three separate bubbles. Team manager John Lelangue told Het Laatste Nieuws. He chooses to travel to Spain in bubbles. “So we split ourselves into three groups, instead of gathering all the riders, team DSs and staff in Mallorca. That’s about seventy people in total.”
“The three groups will occupy a separate hotel within a radius of 30 kilometres from each other in Javea, Oliva and Denia with their own entourage, cars, team bus and equipment vehicle,” explained Lelangue. Of the Belgian teams, normally only Deceuninck – Quick-Step (Calpe) and Alpecin-Fenix (Benicasim) go to training camp in December.
Maxime Monfort, the new performance manager of Lotto Soudal, explains why his team will only organise a training camp in January. “The season went until November. A first training camp in December does not seem necessary to us. Certainly also because the climate in Belgium remains quite favourable for outdoor training until mid-December.”

Mark Cavendish Agrees to Re-Join Deceuninck – Quick-Step
The best sprinter of all time will be with the Wolfpack in 2021
One of the most decorated riders in history, Mark Cavendish is returning to Deceuninck – Quick-Step after five years. Part of the team between 2013 and 2015, when he contributed to the squad’s extraordinary legacy with 44 victories, eight of which came in Grand Tour stages, the Manxman has agreed to sport the new kit of the team, which will be revealed in a couple of days, throughout the 2021 season.
A professional since 2007, Cavendish has left a truly indelible mark on cycling in the past 15 years, winning close to 150 races on the road while in the pro ranks. Of these, 48 were achieved in the Grand Tours, where the 35-year-old has managed to become one of the few riders in history to win all three points jerseys. The 2011 World Championships, 2009 Milano-Sanremo, and two wins in Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne are some of the many other dazzling highlights of a remarkable career that the Brit will continue together with the Wolfpack.
“I can’t explain how delighted I am to be joining Deceuninck – Quick-Step. I have never hidden my affection for my time with the team and to me this genuinely feels like I am coming home. As well as the incredible group of riders, I can’t wait to start working again with the staff, most of which were here during my first spell and were part of one of the most successful periods of my career, an era that I am immensely proud of. Even with an extremely difficult and disrupted season this year, they have shown how strong and unified they are and I am hoping to add to even more. I can’t wait to be back in the Wolfpack,” said Mark Cavendish.
Deceuninck – Quick-Step CEO Patrick Lefevere is delighted to have the former World Champion, whose career also counts several world titles on the track, back in the team: “Us and Mark share many beautiful memories and have a history that goes a long way back. During his three-year spell with the team, he didn’t just claim dozens of victories for the team, he showed amazing panache and what an incredibly dedicated team player he is. We are happy to have him return to our family, as he is a leader and brings across a wealth of experience that he can share with our young riders, but at the same time we are confident he still has something to give to the team.”
Bardet on His New Team
Romain Bardet is without a doubt the biggest new signing to Team DSM (ex-Sunweb) for next season. After nine years, the French rider leaves the familiar nest at AG2R-La Mondiale.
After nine years, Bardet thinks it is the right time to change teams, he told Le Dauphiné Libéré. “It’s a good time, even though I had a good time at AG2R-La Mondiale and remain friends with everyone in the team. It’s heartbreaking in a way as we’ve grown together, but I felt I needed a new impetus in my career. I have always been attracted to Sunweb because their way of working appeals to me.”
In the new environment at Team DSM, the French rider wants to prove himself again after two difficult seasons, which at the most gave him the polka-dot jersey in the Tour de France. “This is a new challenge that will do me a lot of good. This step should show whether it was the right choice. Life is made up of cycles, and sometimes you have to find new energy to keep going. Without a doubt, I have had a few difficult years. I had to move on.”
“The team just wants me to be the best rider I can be. I can’t tell my race schedule yet. We now focus on the basics. Everything I’ve done in the past has been analysed and the team thinks they can chart a new path for me. We will see if it works. I love starting from scratch, but that doesn’t require specific short-term goals,” said Bardet.
The French rider will not be the outspoken leader in his new team, as he was with AG2R. “At Sunweb, the team is always central. The races in which I am drafted are not necessarily a pursuit of a personal result, but are more in the perspective of the team’s overall performance and my development as a rider. It is an unprecedented challenge that I take on.”
Henao signs as first-ever Colombian for Team Qhubeka ASSOS
Sergio Henao will make history by becoming the first Colombian to ever ride for Team Qhubeka ASSOS, when he joins our organisation in 2021.
Henao, 32, has forged a formidable career for himself at the highest level and will add a huge wealth of experience and ability to our squad. That experience includes in riding in support of Chris Froome for two of his Tour de France victories demonstrating the key role that he’s able to play in the biggest races and so brings significant depth to our stage-racing aspirations for the future. The double national champion (2017 & ’18) also won Paris-Nice in 2017 when at Team Sky finishing ahead of Alberto Contador and Dan Martin. He spent seven seasons with the British team before joining Team UAE Emirates. Henao becomes the 23rd confirmed rider on our roster for 2021, with the remainder of our line-up to be confirmed in due course.

I look forward to playing a critical role in supporting my teammates at the various races during the season and I can’t wait to take on this new challenge. Lars Michaelsen – Head Sports Director: “He’s been in the game for a long time and has a lot of experience, which is always really nice to have. From what I understand, having spoken to many people, is that he’s a very valuable team member who is easy to work with that loves his job as a rider; he just simply loves to ride his bike. For us I think the value in him will be his secure role as someone who can cope with grand tours in a helper role or like he did with David de la Cruz at the recent Vuelta for UAE, where he supported him but also went top-15 himself on GC; but perhaps he could be someone we send in a breakaway too so he gives us numerous options. He’s a double-Colombian champion and obviously spent many years with Team Sky so his wealth of experience is something that the team will hopefully and should profit from.”

Israel Start-Up Nation Signs Female Sports Director
The riders of Israel Start-Up Nation will work with a female sports director from next season. Cherie Pridham will take her seat in the team directors car next year, according to a press release from the Israeli WorldTour team.
Pridham is the first female sports director to work in the WorldTour. “I am very proud and it also feels like a privilege. I am now part of one of the best teams in the world and I now get to work with great and legendary riders. I really want to succeed as a sports director, as I can then inspire other women.”
“I am only signed as a sports director and not as a female sports director, although I also understand that people will focus on the female aspect. However, I am on an equal footing with my (male) colleagues. I make the same mistakes and will have the same successes,” said Pridham, who also has a professional career behind her.
The 49-year-old Briton already has experience guiding and coaching male cyclists, having been involved in the British Raleigh team as a manager, director and owner in the past. “She has enforced her position as she has a lot of experience in women’s and men’s cycling,” explains Israel Start-Up Nation owner Sylvan Adams.
“Cherie is a true professional and now has the opportunity to work with the best riders in the world,” said Adams, who has hired a second sports director, Dror Pekatch. The Israeli was also active as sports director during the early days of the team and is now returning.
Janse van Rensburg, Hansen and Pelucchi sign on for Team Qhubeka ASSOS
Team Qhubeka ASSOS is delighted to announce a further three riders that will take to the start line of the 2021 season for Africa’s only UCI-registered WorldTour team.
Former South African champion Reinardt Janse van Rensburg has signed a contact extension which will see him ride his 10th season for the team, having first joined in 2010. During that time he was crowned the national champion in 2017, won the Tour de Langkawi in 2016 and has also secured wins in Portugal, Belgium, Australia and the Netherlands. The “Beast”, as he’s affectionately known, will be looking to once again play an invaluable part as a key, fast-finishing, support rider and is most happy when the racing is at its toughest. The 31-year-old completed five consecutive Tour de France’s including the debut appearance at the event of our team in 2015, and will have hopes once again of fighting for selection to the 2021 event.
In Lasse Norman Hansen, 28, we have signed a rider with a wide skill set who will provide an excellent option in support of sprinter Giacomo Nizzolo, and our other fast men. The Dane is a major track star having claimed Olympic gold in the omnium event at London 2012 as well as bronze in Rio de Janeiro. He is a key part of the Danish national team’s ambitions at the Tokyo Olympic Games, who most recently broke the world record in the team pursuit in Berlin, and he will also be targeting the madison event with Michael Mørkøv. A double-stage winner at the Tour of Denmark, he was also third overall in the 2018 edition of the race and finished fourth overall in 2019.
We’re also delight to welcome Matteo Pelucchi who be a key ally for Nizzolo with the two being lifelong friends. The 31-year-old Italian has numerous sprint victories in his career including stages at the Tour of Poland, Tirreno-Adriatico and Tour de Langkawi, and in 2020 took 4 top-10 finishes at the event.
Reinardt Janse van Rensburg: “I am extremely happy to be continuing my journey with the team. I have been with the team for the majority of my career, and been a part of the various chapters of the journey. I’m thrilled now to be part of be writing another new chapter as we ride as Team Qhubeka ASSOS. I am also humbled to be representing the Qhubeka Charity who are now in our team title. As a South African the greater purpose that we ride for is something very special to me and my family; and to reiterate the message of being able to mobilise people with the power of a bicycle is a great honour.”
Lasse Norman Hansen: “I’d like to say I’m thrilled to join the team and I’m really looking forward to the new season. I’m excited about the role that I’ll be playing and to see us hopefully score many successes; while also having the opportunity to represent my country but also the team at the Tokyo Olympic Games is going to be very special. I’ve heard about the family environment here and so now to also be part of the Qhubeka family is humbling and inspiring.”
Matteo Pelucchi: “The team Qhubeka ASSOS project is one that I strongly believe in and to now join the team for next season is fantastic. I’ve known Giacomo since childhood, so I can’t wait to work with not only a good friend but also one of the best riders in the bunch. He had a pretty good 2020 before he had to stop due to injury so I’m looking to contribute to even greater success next season.”
Lars Michaelsen: “These are three signings who are going to continue to add to the depth and strength of our squad and ultimately provide crucial support to our aspirations for next season. Reinardt is renowned for being such a strong guy and he’s going to play a key role in where he races to help deliver on the team’s objectives deep into the finals. Similarly Matteo’s history shows that he is a finisher and his familiarity with Giacomo can only be a good thing for the team. As for Lasse Norman Hansen, his exploits on the track are seriously impressive and the team of course will be supporting him as he looks to the Tokyo Olympics. He joins us now though at a time in his career where he has to combine track racing more seriously with his progression on the road and so he will have a very clear role in how we will see him supporting our racing ambitions.”

Three More Years with INEOS Grenadiers for Michal Kwiatkowski
INEOS Grenadiers has not yet made it official, but Michał Kwiatkowski announced that he will ride for the British team in the coming seasons, at least until the end of 2023.
Kwiatkowski announced the news during the top sports person of Poland awards. A contract extension for the former World champion took a long time, but the now 30-year-old all-rounder does not feel the need to move team. Kwiatkowski has been racing with Sky/INEOS since 2016.
The Pole won a stage in the Tour de France for the first time in his career this year. He also finished fourth in the Gran Trittico Lombardo, sixth in Flèche Wallonne and Brabantse Pijl and tenth in Liège-Bastogne-Liège. At the World Cycling Championships in Imola he took a shot at the world title, but had to settle for fourth place in the road race.
On Thursday, La Gazzetta dello Sport wrote that two other strongmen in the team, Giro winner Tao Geoghegan Hart and top time trialist Filippo Ganna, had signed up until the end of 2023, but we are still waiting for news from INEOS Grenadiers.

Diego Camargo joins EF Pro Cycling
For the millions of people across the world who ride their bike, the experience of riding on two wheels holds its own personal meaning. For Diego Camargo, the young and upcoming Colombian talent, it’s not just about living his passion. Cycling is also a way of helping his parents, Segundo and Blanca, live a better life.
When local club trainers witnessed Diego’s talent at a young age, they impressed upon him that his vocation in life was to race. His love for riding quickly turned into a passion for racing. Turning up at the Vuelta de Tuta in 2015, Camargo touted a steel bike against a field of well-trained guys, on bikes superior to his – he beat them all by a minute. Fast-forward five years and he’s just taken his biggest wins at the Vuelta a la Juventud and the Vuelta a Colombia.
A latecomer to cycling, in the grand scheme of many professionals, the 22 year old had to learn the hardship of bike racing, overcome some serious crashes and how to master the art of descending. It’s this focus and motivation to keep going, along with raw talent, that caught the eye of EF Pro Cycling team CEO, Jonathan Vaughters.
“He’s one of very few riders ever to win the Vuelta Juventud and Vuelta Colombia in the same year. And one of a very small group of riders who have won the Vuelta Colombia as a u23. Carapaz and Henao being two others,” team CEO, Jonathan Vaughters says. “This speaks to his talent. I think his relatively late start in cycling and his very humble beginnings will work in his favour and eventually reveal a champion of the highest caliber in cycling.”
Like many of his Colombian predecessors, he’s set to make the voyage over to Europe in 2021, where he’ll learn the craft of racing and become a part of the World Tour race scene.

Why do you love to race your bike?
I’m a young and passionate bike rider and I am so happy to be here in the world of cycling reaching towards achieving my goals and getting better every day. For me, it’s a way to help my family and also hopefully be a great example for children coming into the sport.
Where is your favourite place to ride your bike?
My favourite place to ride is around where I live, in Tuta, Boyacá. The people are really friendly and I think it’s down to the type of terrain we live on. But, I dream of Europe, although it’s a place I’m not familiar with, I’ve heard great things about it and I think it’s going to be great for me to be there.
What made you want to join EF Pro Cycling? Why did you choose this team?
I chose to come to EF because it seems like a really great squad, and I can see how a team like this will be able to help me grow as a person and as a cyclist, and achieve my cycling dreams.
What type of cyclist are you?
I’m a well-rounded cyclist and can perform well on all terrains, but primarily I’m a climber.
What are you hoping for in 2021?
In 2021, I want to help contribute to the team and give 100%, whilst also gaining a lot of experience, by adapting to the racing and little by little preparing my body to hopefully win some races.
Rod Ellingworth to Leave Team Bahrain McLaren
Rod’s passion is rider development, so he has decided to move on and focus on new projects close to his heart.
Reflecting on the last 14 months, during which time Team Bahrain McLaren achieved 4 top ten GC placings across the Grand Tours, we can feel proud of what the team has accomplished, and we know Rod leaves the team set up to achieve even greater success in the future.
A spokesperson from Team Bahrain McLaren said: “We would like to take this opportunity to thank Rod for the expertise and wisdom he imparted on the team. The performance first ethos and winning mindset he instilled in every team member will endure. We wish Rod all the very best for the future. The team is now wholly focused on its transition to Bahrain Victorious for next year, and we are looking forward to sharing more about our vision over the coming month. And it goes without saying, we can’t wait to get back to racing.”
Rod Ellingworth said: “The time has come for me to move on. I have thoroughly enjoyed the chance to lead this team. There has been some fantastic momentum, and I feel I leave the team in a strong position. We’ve worked well together in this global pandemic to keep racing and have achieved some fantastic results. The team has pulled together and tried hard to keep everyone safe. The team were united through tough times, and it was a pleasure to be part of it. One of the highlights for me was achieving a fourth place in the general classification at the Tour de France.”
Ellingworth continues: “I want to thank the whole team for all their hard work and dedication. I wish the team all the best for the future and will follow their progress and progression. Axel Merckx and the Future of the Hagens Berman Axeon Team
Axel Merckx and his team Hagens Berman Axeon were in financial trouble. The American development team had a budget deficit of about €300,000. Part of that gap has now been filled, says Axel Merckx.
“I and my team needed €300,000 for the budget for 2021 and have now more or less found half,” Merckx wrote in a column for La Dernière Heure. He is already looking forward to 2021. “This will allow us to run a normal season with a nice schedule in Europe.”
In 2018 and 2019 Hagens Berman Axeon was still a ProContinental team, but last season the team took a step back to continental level. “We bring talents to the WorldTour every year. That will not change. Our project is different from other ProContinentals teams. I always said we would be better off as a continental team,” Merckx said at the time.
Four riders from Hagens Berman Axeon will make the step to the pros next year. Jakob Egholm goes to Trek-Segafredo, Kevin Vermaerke to Sunweb, André Carvalho joins Cofidis and Jens Reynders makes the switch to Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise.
Axle and Eddy Merckx:
Shoulder Injury for Thomas
Geraint Thomas has a serious shoulder injury from a crash during training. The Welshman had dislocated his shoulder and could not be put back in place for two hours. “I slipped on an icy stretch and dislocated my shoulder,” explained Thomas.
“This was not the Sunday I expected,” said the INEOS Grenadiers rider. “Fortunately my shoulder is back, after two very painful hours. Fortunately, I have not suffered any fractures. Everything is now good to turn on the turbo again tomorrow.”
It is not known whether Thomas’s shoulder injury will delay his training for the coming season. However, he had to miss a Zwift event due to the crash. “Maybe I need a few extra recovery rides on Zwift,” he said on Twitter.
It is not the first setback for Thomas in 2020. He missed the Tour de France due to a form crisis and the Giro d’Italia, his new main goal, had to be abandoned due to a pelvic fracture.
Fractures for Kamil Malecki After Training Crash
Kamil Małecki will not be able to train for a while. The 24-year-old rider, who will ride for Lotto Soudal next season, has broken his collarbone and pelvis during training. “There are a lot of small fractures,” Małecki told Polish media.
“It is difficult to perform an operation. The doctors concluded that I should just rest now as there is a chance that the healing process will take place on its own. I will undergo another scan in two weeks to see if the fractures heal by themselves.”
The question now is when Małecki can make his debut for his new employer Lotto Soudal. “The team has informed me not to worry. A cycling year lasts a long time and the most important thing now is just to get back to normal. I need time to recover. I will keep them informed of my rehabilitation.”

Didi Senft, sometimes called El Diablo, born February 7, 1952 in Reichenwalde in Brandenburg (Germany), is known as the devil of the Tour de France. His passion for cycling has become his life. He travels the world to encourage athletes and make the hearts of spectators vibrate.
He is also an outstanding inventor artist. He created many unusual and wacky bikes. He has more than 17th world records for bicycle-related inventions. According to the Guinness Book of Records, Didi Senft built the largest movable guitar, taking the form of a bicycle, the largest rolling bicycle as well as surprising works of ingenuity like the Michael Jackson bicycle specially made in homage to the artist or even “Football Bike” created before the Croatia-Germany match during Euro 2008.
At the source of the idea a friendship like no others
At the source of the idea of this fundraising is a friendship like no others. Three years ago, Diter Senft was invited to a new cycling event, the Tour des Stations. The organisers and El Diablo build a friendship. Each year the team and Didi who comes to diffuse his energy on the event always ready to encourage fans of valiant cyclists reunite themselves.
