TOP STORY: Remco Evenepoel Remembers His Crash in Lombardy
On Tuesday it was a month since Remco Evenepoel crashed heavily in the finalé of the Tour of Lombardy. The 20-year-old rider still remembers every second of his fall, when he broke his hip. “From the first to the last second. From the moment I dive into the ravine until they put me in the ambulance,” he told Het Laatste Nieuws.
The site of his disaster was extensively explored by Evenepoel, he explained. The day before the race, he studied all the turns on the descent together with his team DS. “To be able to draw them out beautifully. I rode them at least two or three times so that I could determine the ideal line. We even made them “traffic-free” for a while, so I could take them up to course speed.”
It still went wrong on the day. “In the race I got advice from ‘Brama’ (DS, Bramati) to put me at the back of the group. ‘Descend yourself five to ten metres, Remco,’ he said. ‘Don’t take any chances, because you know how dangerous those turns are.’ I did. The wrong decision, then. The two guys ahead of me made a mistake in the first corner. They went to the outside. I was shocked. ‘Oops, it’s a prize for them,’ I feared.”
“Because I had taken a better line myself and came out of the corner with a little more speed, I was actually riding loose on the two. In panic, that slowed me down a bit. My rear wheel slid away, I had to steer in the first corner. It made a difference of five centimetres or I would have passed that wall and there would never have been a crash. Now I hit it with the outside of my leg. I went straight down.”
“Don’t ask me why. I saw a black hole, perhaps through all the shadows. At that point I didn’t realise how deep I would fall and how exactly I would land: hard or soft. I ended up landing first on the tip and then the sole of my right foot. For the first ten seconds after the fall, I couldn’t breathe anymore. That was because of my bruised lung. I wanted to scramble, but because of that pelvic fracture I couldn’t put in any force.”
“For a moment, for a few minutes, I felt really ‘abandoned’. Then it all started. Put on the stretcher. The hellish way up. Difficult, between the trees and very steep. It was only in the ambulance on the way to the hospital that everything started to settle.”
A broken hip was eventually diagnosed in hospital. Although he suffered serious injuries and had to draw the line on the rest of the season, he is especially grateful that he is still there. “I realise I have been very lucky.”
In the meantime, the doctors have allowed him to put some weight on his hip again. For the time being, it’s still short steps in the garden with crutches. “A new scan will follow on 25 September. Then I may get positive news again and I can look further ahead. Although I will probably rebuild in 2021 towards Ardennes classics. The continuation of my program will then depend on whether or not the Olympic Games take place in Tokyo.”
Tour de France 2020
Lennard Kämna (BORA-hansgrohe) claimed his first stage win on stage 16 in Villard-de-Lans. It’s the first German victory at the Tour de France since John Degenkolb on stage 9 to Roubaix in 2018. After taking his first pro success in stage 4 of the Critérium du Dauphiné and coming second to Dani Martinez at Puy Mary, the 24 year old met all the expectations since he was a runner-up at the 2017 U23 World championship behind Benoît Cosnefroy, who miraculously retained the polka dot jersey while Primoz Roglic stayed in yellow on the eve of the queen stage to col de la Loze.
156 riders took the start of Stage 16 at La Tour-du-Pin. It was a very active start. A 25 rider group rode away after 8 kilometres, including French attackers Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) and Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) along with Richard Carapaz (INEOS-Grenadier). Carapaz attacked again after the regrouping at km 17. Nicolas Roche (Sunweb) went with him. They formed a front group of 15 riders with addition at km 22 of Andrey Amador (Ineos-Grenadier), Lennard Kämna, Daniel Oss (BORA-hansgrohe), Alaphilippe (Deceuninck – Quick-Step), Sébastien Reichenbach (Groupama-FDJ), Alberto Bettiol (EF Education First), Winner Anacona, Warren Barguil (Arkéa-Samsic), Imanol Erviti, Carlos Verona (Movistar), Matteo Trentin (CCC), Chris Juul Jensen (Mitchelton-Scott), Roche (Sunweb), Quentin Pacher (B&B Hotels-Vital Concept). Trentin took 20 points at the intermediate sprint at 44.5km. It became an 18-man breakaway group when Pierre Rolland (B&B Hotels-Vital Concept), Tiesj Benoot and Casper Pedersen (Sunweb) made the junction at 56km.
Rolland crested col de Porte in the lead. Neilson Powless (EF), Pavel Sivakov (INEOS-Grenadier), Romain Sicard (Total Direct Energie), Mikel Nieve (Mitchelton-Scott) and Simon Geschke (CCC) bridged the gap at 56 kilometres to make it a front group of 23 riders. Rolland also soloed to take another 5 KOM points at the top of the côte de Revel. The deficit of the peloton was 12 minutes with 60km to go and 12:30 with 40km to go. Pacher was first to attack from the leading group 35km before the end as they started climbing to St-Nizier-du-Moucherotte (cat. 1). 6km before the summit, following a strong pull by Amador, four riders went clear behind the Frenchman: Reichenbach, Carapaz, Kämna and Alaphilippe. It made a leading group of five riders 25km before the end. Kämna sped up to take the KOM and continued solo after the summit with 18km remaining.
After seizing the right moment to get rid of the winner of the 2019 Giro d’Italia, Kämna remained composed till the end. Being a stronger time trialist than Carapaz, he extended his lead over the Ecuadorian who left Team Ineos Grenadier with no stage victory at the Tour de France since Geraint Thomas at L’Alpe d’Huez in 2018. Swiss national champion Sébastien Reichenbach (Groupama-FDJ) rounded out the podium.

Stage winner, Lennard Kämna (BORA-hansgrohe): “I’m feeling great right now, this stage victory at the Tour de France made it an absolutely awesome day! It was a fight right from the start and I knew I had to make it to the finish alone. When I saw Carapaz slowing down I said to myself it was the moment to go. I attacked and went on until the finish. This victory is also a very big relief for me and the team, I still cannot believe it. The step forward I made this year is huge and I’m so blessed to win today.”
Overall leader, Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma): “Today was a great day for us. We had the stage under control and we retained the yellow jersey. The team did a fantastic job again by keeping me out of trouble. Also kudos to the team for the way in which they countered Tadej. Tomorrow will be a very tough day, we are heading to the highest point in this Tour. It is a very steep final climb. A kind of goat path. We certainly expect the necessary attacks, but if you have the right legs, anything is possible. The team is very strong and we will do our best to defend the yellow. We will fight for every second. We have to focus on ourselves and on our own plan. That is the only thing we can control. It will be a big fight from start to finish. We are ready for that.”
2nd on the stage, Richard Carapaz (INEOS Grenadiers): “I don’t feel disappointed for not having won today. We’re very happy with the work we’ve done. We can’t always win. In fact, as cyclists, we’re more used to losing than winning. Whatever comes from now on in this Tour de France will be welcome. Lennard Kämna was the strongest today. I did my best. I couldn’t do more. It’s a well-deserved triumph for him, and for me it means a lot to come second in a Tour de France stage. We have important days ahead of us. To win a stage would be the best for the team. We wake up every day with this dream and we hope to make it true.”
2nd overall, Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates): “Today was a good day – a nice warm up for tomorrow which will probably be the queen stage. Tomorrow there will be splits I think. I feel good physically, it’s the third week so everyone is exhausted . Day by day the legs are getting more and more tired but I hope I have something left. Tomorrow we have Col de la Loze which will be selective for sure.”
KOM, Benoît Cosnefroy (AG2R-La Mondiale): “My rivals have been sharing the points for a week, they do it at perfection! That’s how I retained the polka dot jersey today, therefore I’ll try to defend it tomorrow, but I have no illusion. It’ll certainly be my last day with it.”
Points leader, Sam Bennett (Deceuninck – Quick-Step): “It was an ok day. I expected a tough start, but in the end it was fine. I carefully dosed my effort, which was important, especially as this Tour is so hard, and tracked down all the moves ahead of the sprint. It’s nice to continue in the green jersey and I’m getting more optimistic, but there’s still a lot of work to do.”
Birthday rider, Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma): “It was a controlled stage, but one with a tough final. The stage went as we expected. Although it took a while before we could let a breakaway escape. The points classification continues to play a role in this. When that breakaway finally had been established, we soon had the stage under control. We wanted to force as little as possible, knowing what is yet to come. Although we still had to stay focused and sharp when Guillaume Martin and Pogacar attacked.”

Miguel Angel “Superman” Lopez claimed the Queen Stage 17 of the 107th Tour of France atop the gruelling and spectacular col de la Loze after he overhauled his old arch-rival Richard Carapaz who had tried his luck from a long way out. The battle of the Slovenians for the overall victory confirmed Primoz Roglič in the yellow jersey as he crossed the line in second place with a significant advantage over Tadej Pogačar who is the new King of the Mountains.
152 riders started stage 17 in Grenoble. Defending champion Egan Bernal (INEOS) and Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ) were non-starters. It was another fast start with many skirmishes. Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal) was first to open a gap at 16km. A front group of 25 riders was composed at 24km. Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck – Quick-Step), Richard Carapaz (INEOS), Gorka Izagirre (Astana), Lennard Kämna (BORA-hansgrohe) and Dan Martin (Israel Start-Up Nation) attacked from this group at 30km. They rode above 50km/h on the flat roads and reached a maximum advantage of 6 minutes just before climbing to col de la Madeleine.
Bahrain-McLaren took over from Jumbo-Visma at the head of the peloton. They quickly reduced the deficit to the four leaders to 3:30. Kämna was dropped off the front group meanwhile Nairo Quintana (Arkea-Samsic), Pierre Rolland (B&B Hotels-Vital Concept), Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) and Dani Martinez (EF) couldn’t hold the pace of the yellow jersey peloton. Carapaz crested La Madeleine in first place ahead of Alaphilippe and Pogacar passed first of the peloton to become the virtual leader of the KOM competition. Dan Martin lost contact with the head of the race in the downhill. He was brought back by the peloton still led by Bahrain-McLaren. At that point, the time difference was 2:40 after having been reduced to 1:15 at the top of La Madeleine.
Alaphilippe, Izagirre and Carapaz started the 21.5km long final ascent with an advantage of 2 minutes. 12.5km before the end, Alaphilippe dropped back meanwhile Pello Bilbao upped the tempo for Bahrain-McLaren. Carapaz soloed at the front with 9km to go. From 20 seconds, his advantage went up again to 45 seconds at the 5km to go mark. With 4km remaining, under the action of David De La Cruz (UAE Team Emirates), Mikel Landa lost contact, soon joined by Rigoberto Uran (EF). Lopez (Astana) and Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma) caught Carapaz 3km before the top. The Colombian continued on his own, chased down by Roglič while Pogačar gave it all to come across to the yellow jersey. The top 3 riders remained in that order on the extremely steep finalé.

Stage winner and 3rd overall, Miguel Ángel López (Astana): “I had this stage in my mind, I was focused on it and tried to come to this day in a right form. I knew that this kind of climbs over 2000 meters above sea level would suit me really well. Big and long climbs like Col de la Loze really suit me because it is similar to the climbs I have at home in Colombia. I feel good on the altitude and today I wanted to do something. Together with the team we did a good plan before the stage and we tried to follow it from start to finish. I had a great support of my team during the whole day and also in the final Omar Fraile did an excellent job for me. He was phenomenal today! Coming into the last climb I felt quite well, and my legs worked perfectly. Indeed, it was a super hard climb, but I managed to stay in front in the leading group until the decisive kilometres. I knew this climb very well, because we did a reconnaissance with the team earlier in August, so I knew what to expect and where to try to attack. It was super hard in the final and I had the longest two kilometres of my life, but I continued pushing hard until the finish line. I saw some Colombian fans along the road, they were cheering for me and it also gave me some additional motivation to keep on pushing hard. I am super happy with my win, I was dreaming about it and now I’ve got it. It is so beautiful! Well, now I am third in the general classification and of course, I would like to continue fighting for the overall until the finish in Paris. We still have three difficult stages ahead of us, every day could be decisive, and we have to keep our concentration on maximum. I will continue going through this race day by day until Paris.”
Overall leader and 2nd on the stage, Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma): “It was a very good day for us”, Roglic said. “I am very happy with what we have shown today and also with the time gained. Of course I would have liked to win the stage, but Lopez was a bit too strong. It was a very tough stage with a very steep final climb. When I see an opportunity, I attack, and so I did. Most importantly, apart from Lopez, I have gained time on my competitors. However, the Tour is not over yet and there are still three tough days to come. We have to stay focused and be ready for the attacks that we expect to come. The team was very strong. I cannot thank my teammates enough. Sepp in particular was impressive today.”
2nd overall, 3rd on the stage, best young rider and KOM, Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates): “I lost a few seconds on what was a really hard climb. I gave my best, the team gave their best and we got third place on the day to show for it. Tomorrow we will be ready for another very tough stage and then there will also be the time trial on Saturday, the Tour is not over and anything can still happen.”
Most combative rider, Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck – Quick-Step): “I knew what we would face today, as I did a recon with Dries and Bob a couple of weeks ago. To be honest, it wasn’t my goal to be in the break, but I felt good and attacked, and when I saw we had a gap I just kept pushing. You never know what can happen, so it’s always worth trying. It’s always nice to get the combativity trophy and really special to be again on the Tour de France podium.”
Green jersey, Sam Bennett (Deceuninck – Quick-Step): “It was a tough one today. I put in a good fight at the beginning, tried to get some points and did it with the help of Michael. Then on the first climb it was quite ok, but towards the end it became harder, as the climb was in steps and the rhythm always changed. But I am glad that I ticked it off and will continue to fight for this jersey.”
Break rider, Lennard Kämna (BORA-hansgrohe): “Today was a hard stage. I made it to the breakaway group but I didn’t have the legs to follow them on the Col de la Madeleine. So, after that, I just wanted to ride to the finish.”

Tirreno-Adriatico EOLO 2020
The Italian time trial specialist wins the San Benedetto del Tronto with a record average speed of 56.636 km/h. Simon Yates defends the Maglia Azzurra and conquers the ‘Race of the Two Seas’, beating Thomas (second) and Majka (third).
The British rider Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) has won the 55th edition of the Tirreno-Adriatico EOLO. In the final 10.05km long ITT in San Benedetto del Tronto, Simon Yates defended his Maglia Azzurra from Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers), who finished second in the GC. Rafal Majka (BORA-hansgrohe) completes the podium at the ‘Corsa dei Due Mari’. Filippo Ganna (INEOS Grenadiers) meanwhile, won Stage 8, beating Victor Campenaerts (NTT Pro Cycling) and Rohan Dennis (INEOS Grenadiers).
Stage winner, Filippo Ganna (INEOS Grenadiers): “This is a wonderful victory for me. We’ve worked so hard all Tirreno-Adriatico for Geraint [Thomas]. This morning he told me to give it everything and go for the win, and I did. I’m happy as well from the perspective of taking a win for Italy, and I’ve been told that I’ve broken [Fabian] Cancellara’s course record here. Now I’ve got to concentrate on the time trial event at the World Championships where I’ll be hoping to beat my teammate Rohan [Dennis].”
Overall winner, Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott): “I’m a different rider now compared to how I was in 2018. I am older, I’ve gained more experience and I’ve learnt how to deal with stress. I think I showed this at the Tirreno-Adriatico: I can manage situations better now and stay calm, I think the team trusts me more now as a result. Today I rode a great time trial. I wasn’t sure how much time I could have won or lost against Thomas and Majka. Sometimes I’m good against the clock, but it’s so difficult to say ahead of time. After this result, I’m looking forward to resting up for a few days. Then I’ll be doing some targeted training for the Giro, to push my form ahead of the race’s start. Some big mountains are coming up at the Giro so I would like to do some altitude training.”
4th on the stage and 2nd overall, Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers): “I’m pleased with how this week has gone – 2nd is a good result. I feel like I’ll be stronger at the Giro, but so many others will be too! The time trial went well, I paced it pretty well. Perhaps I had a few more seconds in the bank, but not 17 seconds – so that makes me feel better about missing out on the win overall! I’m really excited about riding the Giro now. The Astana guys are going to be a big threat, Wilco Kelderman too – there are lots of big names and very strong teams. Nibali will be better at the Giro too, definitely. It’s going to be very competitive.”
3rd overall, Rafal Majka (BORA-hansgrohe): “I am really happy because my form is getting better and better in time for the upcoming Giro d’Italia. I lost second place in the GC to Geraint Thomas but like I said, my legs are good, and the whole team had a great week with 2 stage victories from Pascal [Ackermann], a lot of podiums and a third place finish in the GC. Now I’m focussed on the Giro d’Italia, I’m going to target it and go for a podium, maybe win a stage too.”
Maglia Arancio Pascal Ackermann (BORA-hansgrohe): “I haven’t ridden a TT bike in such a long time! Today was a bit like a rest day today, it was more relaxed, I took it a little easy. I’m really really happy to have won the jersey, and I’m super pleased with my performances this week. Coming into the Tirreno, I wasn’t feeling too great about my riding, so the results I’ve got here have been good for both my legs and for my head.”
Maglia Verde Hector Carretero (Movistar): “The Maglia Verde is a big prize for me and for the team. We came here with another goal, to win a stage or two, but it’s nice to take something home and this race has been great preparation. I have a few stages that I will target at the Giro, I’d love to win one! Now it’s time to rest and get ready to go again in October.”
Maglia Bianca, Aleksandr Vlasov (Astana): “I didn’t think I would be able to gain a lot of time on my rivals today – the route is short and very flat which doesn’t really suit me. I’ll be working on my time trial riding to make sure that next time I’ll be a little bit faster. Overall though, I’m happy with my performance and result at the Tirreno-Adriatico. For me, this was a big test for the Giro, and I did well. I’ll have a little rest and prepare myself to be ready to fight. I’m looking forward to it.”

Skoda-Tour of Luxembourg 2020
Diego Ulissi put in a confident performance to take his first win of the season on Stage 1 of the Skoda-Tour of Luxembourg (2.Pro) on Tuesday. After being set up nicely by his teammates, the Italian made one of his trademark punchy attacks on the final incline which came with 1km to go. As the group came back Ulissi eased off before pouncing with 250m to go and holding off until the line. Jasper Philipsen and Rui Oliveira finished off a strong team performance with 5th an 6th respectively on the stage.
Stage winner and overall leader, Diego Ulissi (UAE Team Emirates): “The team did a great job today, setting me up perfectly for my attack in the last kilometre. I did a good sprint, finally managing to get my first win of the season after so many placings. The stage in general wasn’t too hard, but the final 20 km were complicated, especially the last thousand meters, where luckily I had great legs.”

Arnaud Démare (Groupama-FDJ) won Stage 2 of the Tour de Luxembourg. The race was neutralised for a long time in protest of the dangerous conditions. After the peloton had started up again, the peloton sprinted for the win in Hesperange.
After the opening stage, there was a lot of commotion about safety. Riders complained about dangerous conditions due to parked cars and trucks on the roads. In the second stage, from Remich to Hesperange, there was little improvement and after 18 kilometres the peloton pulled the brakes on in protest. After a discussion with the race organisers it was decided to neutralise the race until the circuit around Hesperange.
Once in Syren, 40 kilometres from the finish, the race was restarted for the two local circuits of 11.2 kilometres each. Five riders escaped almost immediately and crossed the finish line for the first time with a small gap, but they were caught again a little later. Luc Wirtgen and Loïc Vliegen were the next to try. They started the last lap with a small lead.
Wirtgen and Vliegen, on the undulating roads, were pulled back. The peloton remained restless and not much later Etienne van Empel and Jan Maas attacked out of the peloton. But on the climb to Syren, the Dutch were chased down. AG2R-La Mondiale and Uno-X then took control of the peloton with 4 kilometres to go. The pace rose sharply in the run-in to the finish.
Groupama-FDJ then led the peloton to the last kilometre ahead Arnaud Démare. In the last 150 metres, the French champion started his sprint. For a moment Jasper Philipsen seemed to make it difficult for the Frenchman, but the Belgian of UAE Team Emirates had to watch the Frenchman cross the line first. Alexander Krieger took third place on the wheel of Démare and Philipsen. Diego Ulissi crossed the line in the peloton and kept the leader’s jersey.
Stage winner, Arnaud Démare (Groupama-FDJ): “We know that it’s hard to organise races currently, and it is all the more difficult to give a rant. Unfortunately, security was not enough, neither yesterday nor this morning and all the riders found it logical to protest. Our sport is quite dangerous, it should not be made even more complicated with cars on our way.”

Giro della Toscana – Memorial Alfredo Martini 2020
Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates) won the Giro della Toscana on Wednesday. In the final sprint, the Colombian started his sprint early and no one ever came close to him. Robert Stannard finished in second place, Ethan Hayter was the third.
Today was the 5th edition of the Giro della Toscana since its return to the calendar in 2016. Through and around Pontedera a route of 182.9 kilometres had the climb of Peccioli as the main obstacle. From the last climb there was still quite a distance to the finish line, so a game of cat and mouse was expected in advance between attackers and the sprinters. The Monte Serra was not used this year.
The early break of eight animated the race for a long time and were allowed to ride away from the peloton and take 4:30. In the second half of the race, the pack started to catch the leading group and in the last 8 kilometres everything was back together. Despite a late attack by Iñigo Elosegui in the last 3 kilometres, the sprint would take place for the win. Gaviria started from far out and no one could get near him.
Race winner, Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates): “Whenever I pin a number on my bike I want to try and win. I made a couple of mistakes in Tirreno but I’ve recovered well since then and today we did a good job as a team. I was sitting a bit further down the group trying to stay out of stress and I saw an opportunity to go early in the sprint and I managed to get a big gap and luckily no-one came past me.”

Baden: First Cyclocross of the Season – First Podium for Kevin Kuhn
This Sunday, the first cyclocross races of the season were on the calendar. With Shana Maes participating in a training race in Herentals, Kevin Kuhn was in his home country at the start of the first race of the EKZ Tour in Baden. The Swiss rider took the lead early in the race. Later, a group of four was formed on the fast and dusty circuit. Finally, only the Swiss champion Forster managed to make a difference. Behind, Kevin Kuhn was defeated by Vincent Bastaens in the sprint for second place. In this way, the first cyclocross race of the season for Tormans Cyclo Cross Team resulted in a first podium spot.
At the training race in Herentals, Shana Maes had to start at the fifth row. She rode to the front and finished 4th, behind winner Sanne Cant.
Kevin Kuhn: “I’m very happy about my first cyclocross race of the season, even though it is a pity to miss the second place by only a couple of centimetres. At the beginning, we were a group of twenty riders, so I decided so accelerate. I rode at my own pace, and suddenly I was alone. Later, I was joined by some others, enabling me to recover for the final on this nice and fast course. Forster is in a great shape for the mountain bike season, so he was difficult to beat. I’m looking forward to the next team meeting in Belgium!”

Egan Bernal has withdrawn from the Tour de France ahead of stage 17
The 23 year old will now focus on his recovery from the Tour, and reset his goals for the remainder of the season.
INEOS Grenadiers Team Principal Sir Dave Brailsford said: “We have taken this decision with Egan’s best interests at heart. Egan is a true champion who loves to race, but he is also a young rider, with many Tours ahead of him and at this point, on balance, we feel it is wiser for him to stop racing.”
Egan Bernal said: “This is obviously not how I wanted my Tour de France to end, but I agree that it is the right decision for me in the circumstances. I have the greatest respect for this race and I am already looking forward to coming back in the years ahead.”

Joint ASO-UCI Announcement Regarding the 13th and 14th September Testing Campaign
In accordance with the Tour de France health protocol, developed in the framework of the Union Cycliste Internationale’s (UCI) rules for the return of the road cycling season in the context of the coronavirus pandemic, the entire “race bubble” was tested on the 13th and 14th September, during the 2nd rest day.
After having been tested within the 6 days preceding the Grand Départ in Nice as well as upon their arrival on the Tour as a part of the “race bubble”, riders and staff involved in the race were tested a 3rd time during the 1st rest day over the 6th and 7th of September.
The screening campaign which has taken place over the past 48 hours is therefore the 4th since the beginning of the event. Its objective is to guarantee the health of the race for the riders and accredited personnel in the face of the novel coronavirus.
Overall, each of the 785 tests carried out returned negative results.
The organisers of the Tour de France and the UCI would like to thank all of the teams for their collaboration and for the vigilance that they have shown and will continue to show up until the finish in Paris.
Tour Boss, Prudhomme Back After Negative Corona Test
His seven days of isolation are over as a new test gave a negative result. Christian Prudhomme will resume his duties as Tour boss from Tuesday.
Early last week, Christian Prudhomme, along with four team staff members, tested positive for Covid-19. He left the Tour and retired to isolation for a week. In the meantime, the Tour boss tested again and this time with a negative result. On Tuesday he returned to resume his duties.
The teams Cofidis, AG2R-La Mondiale, Mitchelton-Scott and INEOS Grenadiers don’t have to worry anymore. Even though one staff member tested positive for each of these teams last week, their score is now back to zero. Only after two positive tests does a team have to leave the Tour.

CCC Team Implements Covid-19 Protocol at Tirreno – Adriatico Due to Suspected Positive case
CCC Team has withdrawn Łukasz Wiśniowski and Szymon Sajnok from Tirreno – Adriatico due to a suspected case of SARS Covid-19.
Wiśniowski withdrew from stage seven after developing mild symptoms during the stage and underwent a rapid test on Sunday evening which indicated a positive result. Wiśniowski will undergo a PCR test to confirm the result.
As per CCC Team’s Covid-19 policy, Wiśniowski’s roommate Szymon Sajnok has automatically been withdrawn from racing and will also undergo a PCR test.
In consultation with the Tirreno – Adriatico race medical team, all remaining CCC Team riders and staff present at the race underwent rapid testing twice on Sunday evening and Monday morning with all tests returning negative results and clearance to continue racing issued by RCS.
CCC Team Chief Medical Officer Dr Max Testa provided the following update.
“Łukasz Wiśniowski presented with mild symptoms while racing on stage seven of Tirreno – Adriatico. As per CCC Team’s Covid-19 policy, Wiśniowski was immediately removed from the race and underwent a rapid test which indicated a positive result. Wiśniowski has been isolated from the team, along with his roommate Szymon Sajnok and his therapist, and will undergo a PCR test to confirm the result. This is a situation we have prepared for since the racing season resumed and we will respect all necessary protocols should further testing confirm a positive case,” Dr. Testa said.
EF Pro Cycling Implement COVID-19 Protocol at Tirreno-Adriatico
Rider Magnus Cort Nielsen returned a positive test for the COVID-19 virus on Sunday, Sept. 13, after the Tirreno-Adriatico stage. He was isolated from the team and others, and then drove himself to Girona, Spain, where he is now in quarantine. All riders and team staff were then tested twice, on Sunday and Monday, Sept. 14, and all returned negative results for COVID-19.

Giulio Ciccone Fully Recovered from Corona Virus
Giulio Ciccone has received the green light from the doctors to train again. The Italian withdrew in isolation for more than two weeks after a positive corona test, but is allowed to go outside again after two negative tests.
Ciccone’s positive test was dated August 31. The 25-year-old rider had to pass for Tirreno-Adriatico and was also unable to train outside, one month before the Giro d’Italia. However, the Trek-Segafredo climber got good news today: the rider tested negative twice for COVID-19 this week.
His team says in a press release that the Italian has fully recovered and has not sustained any permanent damage. “This means that Giulio Ciccone can train again and focus on the upcoming matches.” It is still unclear when the rider will pin a back number again.
“We will continue to evaluate his physical and mental situation in the coming period,” it sounds. Ciccone hopes to be ready in time for the Giro d’Italia. The three-week stage race starts on October 3.
BORA – hansgrohe signs the talented Giovanni Aleotti and extends with Matteo Fabbro
Following his solid performance this season, Matteo Fabbro’s contract has been extended for another year, while the top talent Giovanni Aleotti has signed a three-year contract with BORA – hansgrohe.

Biannic, Teruel Re-Sign with Stronger Movistar Team in 2021
Double French champion, Spanish allrounder will continue to wear the Blue jersey as part of 12-rider roster, still to be finalised.
The Movistar Team announced Monday that Alba Teruel (Benigànim, ESP; 1996) and Aude Biannic (Rennes, FRA; 1991) have re-signed for an additional one and two years, respectively, with the women’s outfit managed by Sebastián Unzué, which currently has 12 riders on board for the 2021 season (provisional list available below). The contract renewals of the two Blue riders means two more riders who were part of the Spanish team’s original project in 2018 will stay next year.
Biannic, a double French national road champion and scorer of the Movistar Team’s first ever UCI success at the Lotto Belgium Tour two years ago, has built a strong reputation throughout these years as a reliable rider for all kinds of situations: a solid classics contender, a good time trialist – bronze-medal finisher at last August’s Nationals – strong into mixed terrains and with big teamwork skills. Teruel, in turn, has continued to build a notable career as a team player, with a nice finishing speed – she came close to success in Dottignies (’18) and Burgos (’19)- and always available to give her leaders a helping hand.
With Aude and Alba extending their contracts, the Movistar Team has 12 names confirmed for its fourth season in the peloton – its second as a UCI Women’s WorldTour roster – a lineup still to be confirmed and the longest, when more names are added, in the team’s history. The riders on board at the moment are: Alicia González, Sheyla Gutiérrez, Lourdes Oyarbide, Gloria Rodríguez, Alba Teruel (ESP), Katrine Aalerud (NOR), Aude Biannic (FRA), Jelena Erić (SRB), Barbara Guarischi (ITA), Emma Norsgaard (DEN), Paula Patiño (COL) and Annemiek van Vleuten (NED).
Harry Sweeny to Sign, Harm Vanhoucke to Re-Sign with Lotto Soudal
Two young riders, Australian Harry Sweeny (22) and Belgian Harm Vanhoucke (23) reached an agreement with WorldTour Team Lotto Soudal until end 2022. Sweeny is currently riding for Lotto Soudal Development Team while Vanhoucke is already part of Lotto Soudal since July 2018.
Harry Sweeny, from Warwick (Queensland, Australia) lives in Meerhout (Belgium) during the season. As a winner of a stage in the Rhône-Alpes Isère Tour, he joined the Lotto Soudal U23 team in 2020, where he proved to be a versatile rider.
“I am a particularly a rider for the classics and a good lead-out guy, but I can climb as well. In the last Tour Bitwa Warszawska and Baby Giro the team was apparently more than happy with my performance and commitment for the team. I am super excited to join the WorldTour team, where I will find my compatriot Caleb Ewan. We know each other quite well. He can count on me”, explains Harry Sweeny.
Harm Vanhoucke came to the pro category with high references as winner of the Piccolo Giro di Lombardia, Flèche Ardennaise and stage wins in Tour de Savoie Mont Blanc and Giro della Valle d’Aosta Mont Blanc. Harm is a climber.
“My first season in the team didn’t go as expected, as I suffered from anemia. The team gave me the necessary time to recover and with the help of my trainer Paul Van Den Bosch we fought back”, tells Harm Vanhoucke.
Two weeks ago Vanhoucke won the mountains classification in the Tour de Poitou-Charentes. Earlier this season he finished 12th in Tour de l’Ain and 10th in Vuelta a Andalucía Ruta del Sol.
“I feel good with Lotto Soudal. We have a nice family atmosphere in the team. Now I’m heading to the Tour de Luxembourg. After the Belgian Championships I will do my first Tour of Italy. I look forward to my first Giro”, concluded Harm Vanhoucke.

De Marchi to Israel Start-Up Nation
Israel Start-Up Nation confirmed the arrival of Alessandro De Marchi. The 34-year-old Italian comes from CCC and signed a two-year deal with Chris Froome’s new team. De Marchi has been signed as a helper in Grand Tours.
“With his experience and versatility, a strong rider like Alessandro De Marchi is a reinforcement,” said Sylvan Adams, co-owner of Israel Start-Up Nation. “He can climb and time trial and is therefore an extra force for the Grand Tours and other WorldTour competitions.”
The Italian has completed twelve major Tours, with three stage victories in the Vuelta. “This switch motivates me.” said De Marchi. “As always, I see myself as a helper at first, but also as a free agent if I get the chance. I like to race aggressively and do have some trumps in breakaways, especially in short or longer stage races.”
“I feel like I can get even better in some areas. Since last year I also focus on time trials and I want to continue with that. And I am aiming for a second participation in the Olympics. In addition, it remains a personal goal to win a stage in every Grand Tour.”
Team manager Kjell Carlström sees the Italian as a key figure in stage work. “The ideal man to protect the leader’s jersey in the second or third week of a grand tour, if we had one. In addition, he can indeed go for the win if he is part of an escape. But he can also perform well in the Ardennes classics, for example.”
Alessandro De Marchi:
Mitchelton-Scott Confirm Signing Amund Grøndahl Jansen
As expected, Amund Grøndahl Jansen will move from Jumbo-Visma to Mitchelton-Scott at the end of this season. The 26-year-old Norwegian signed a two-year contract and will mainly ride the Classics.
The former Norwegian champion has been riding for Jumbo-Visma since 2017, but was looking for a news team after this year. “He will support the ambitions of the team and get more opportunities himself,” the team announced in a press release.
“I’m curious,” said Amund Grøndahl Jansen. “The team looks okay. Family, great atmosphere too. And it is a professional team that always performs well.” His personal goal is to achieve results in the cobbled classics. “I will focus on that for the next two years. And for the rest of the season I will mainly help the others to achieve results.”
He thinks that his previous experience will help him. “I am starting to find my way. Certainly in the cobbled classics, but also in stage races. I can survive longer than the real sprinters in tough competitions and still have a decent sprint in my legs. That’s how I will have to get my results.”

Demi Vollering Joins Team SD Worx
Team SD Worx has been able to secure the talented Demi Vollering for the next two years. In doing so, the current Boels-Dolmans Cycling Team has signed one of the most talented cyclists. “I had a great feeling from the initial meetings with the team. The SD Worx team management expressed their admiration and also outlined a clear plan for the next few years. This was something I could totally get on board with”, says Vollering.
Last year Vollering surprised everyone with her top-ten finishes in the Amstel Gold Race, Walloon Arrow and Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Her third-place finish in Liège, in particular, made a big impression. Later in the season, she also won the Giro dell ‘Emilia in superb style, while impressing with a third place in La Course two weeks ago during this coronavirus-hit season.
“Over the next few years, we think Demi can grow into a rider who could follow in the footsteps of Anna van der Breggen”, says team manager Danny Stam. “In the Classics, she has already proven her class, but she also has the potential to compete with the best in stage races.”
In the coming years Vollering wants to focus on both the Classics and stage races: “The Giro Femminile will certainly be a challenge. And, of course, it’s great that a Tour de France for women will be organised from 2022. I’m already looking forward to it.”
It was a pleasant surprise for Vollering that Team SD Worx came to Switzerland with Danny Stam and the future team leaders Anna van der Breggenand Chantal Blaak. “Of course, it’s fantastic if you feel trusted by the best team in the world”, continues Vollering. “I’m really looking forward to cycling with Anna and Chantal for another year – it’s great that they’ll stay part of the team as coach/team leader from 2022, and I think I can still learn a lot from both of them. Boels-Dolmans has also taken women’s cycling to the next level last years. I’m proud to be joining this team.”
The cyclist from South Holland still had a permanent contract with Parkhotel Valkenburg for 2021. However, thanks to successful negotiations, both teams reached an agreement regarding Vollering’s move. “I’m very grateful to Parkhotel Valkenburg and the team for their trust over the past few years. I’m also delighted that the team helped to make this move work”, emphasises Vollering.
Team leader Raymond Rol understood that Vollering wanted to take things up a gear. “In the next few years, Parkhotel Valkenburg will again turn our focus to developing talented riders under the age of 23. In recent years, we’ve strengthened the team to support Lorena Wiebes and Demi Vollering. Now, we have to be realistic and recognise that we’ll no longer have the riders to back Demi up in the coming seasons. We therefore needed to give her the freedom to go to a team where she can continue to develop”, says Rol.
Danny Stam is also pleased to be able to welcome Vollering to the team and that she has signed a two-year contract, with a further two-year option. “Demi was very high on our list”, confirms Stam. “She left a big impression last year with the hilly terrain. I see a lot of similarities between Demi and Anna van der Breggen. I think Demi can still improve within our team, and she’s essential as we look to build a top team for the future.”
Anna van der Breggen, Chantal Blaak, Jolien d’Hoore, Amy Pieters, Lonneke Uneken, Christine Majerus, Demi Vollering, Elena Cecchini, Roxane Fournier and Anna Shackley have already been secured by Team SD Worx for the coming cycling season.

Loïc Vliegen is one of the eight selected riders to represent the Belgian tricolor at the World Championship in Imola, Italy, on Sunday 27th of September. Short after the cancellation of the rainbow battle in Martigny, Switzerland, the Ferrari race circuit in the north-east of Italy was found as a new venue. Rik Verbrugghe has chosen for Vliegen, Tiesj Benoot, Oliver Naesen, Jasper Stuyven, Pieter Serry, Wout Van Aert, Greg Van Avermaet and Tim Wellens. The race of 258.2 kilometre is composed of nine laps of 28.8 kilometre between the centre of Imola and the race circuit, where start and finish will be. The repetition of the Mazzolano and the Cima Gallisterna, climbs with a length of 3 kilometre, sums up to almost 5000 height meters to be covered.
After many national selections in the youth categories, resulting in a bronze medal at the junior European Championships in Offida, it will be Vliegen’s first participation at the pro World Championships. Even though he was selected for the first ever European Championships in 2016, and he was also a part of the Belgian team at the Tokyo Test Event in 2019. The 26 year old is in a good condition since the competition restart. He has proven it again last week by winning the Tour du Doubs. Vliegen feels ready to play his role within the Belgian team.
Loïc Vliegen: “I missed the selection for the European Championship, so I’m very happy to be a part of the team for the World Championship. The national coach compared the parcours with an Ardennes terrain, which should suit me. I know the finish at the race circuit in Imola since the Giro d’Italia in 2018, but I’ll have to wait a little longer to get to know the rest of the course.”

The upcoming Tour de Luxembourg with five intensive days is the perfect final preparation. I want to give all I have for our two leaders during my first World Championship!”

USA Cycling Announces 2021 Championships Schedule
USA Cycling announced the majority of its 2021 USA Cycling National Championships schedule.
While 2020 has been a difficult year for competition, USA Cycling is looking ahead to 2021 to continue its history of providing great National Championships across all cycling disciplines. With a priority on the safety of all involved at our Nationals Championships, all dates and locations will be subject to change dependent on the status of the COVID pandemic.
Mountain Bike Nationals will return for a second year to Winter Park Resort, July 9-18, with an expanded schedule to include the inaugural High School Bike Festival, High School Mountain Bike National Championship races, and a Collegiate Fair. Collegiate Mountain Bike Nationals will take place in Durango, Colo. at Purgatory Resort, the host of the first Mountain Bike World Championships, on October 14-17. Marathon Mountain Bike will be held in early September at a soon to be announced location.
Collegiate Road Nationals returns for a second year to the Peach State in Augusta, Ga, home to many past USA Cycling National Championships, on May 7-9. USA Cycling returns to Knoxville, TN for a third year for Pro Road Nationals where racers will face the podium defining hills in the criterium, road race, and time trial on June 17-20. Amateur Road Nationals will head for the first time to Clay County, FL on June 24-27. Para Road Nationals will take place in Boise, ID in a partnership between Boise Development Cycling and Challenged Athletes Foundation on July 8-11. Gran Fondo Nationals will return to the previously scheduled location of Asheville, NC on July 18. Masters Road Nationals are currently slated for early August with a location to be finalised and announced shortly.
Elite, Junior, and Para Track Nationals will head to Carson, CA at the Dignity Sports Park VELO Centre, July 1-7. Collegiate Track Nationals will be held at the Major Taylor Velodrome in Indianapolis, Ind., home of Marian University, September 9-11. Masters Track Nationals will round out track Nationals with a return to Valley Preferred Cycling Centre in Breinigsville, Pa. on September 14-19.
In partnership with USA BMX the Elite BMX, Collegiate BMX, and Freestyle National Championships will be announced at a later date.
The 2021 National Championship schedule will close with Cyclocross Nationals, taking place in December, at a location which will be announced later this year.

#EUROTRACK20 Jun/U23 Moved to Fiorenzuola
It will be the Italian velodrome in Fiorenzuola d’Arda that will host, from 8 to 13 October, the Track European Championships for the Juniors and Under 23 categories, which were initially scheduled in Forlì.
Located in Emilia-Romagna, for almost 25 years Fiorenzuola has been one of the most active velodromes on an international level. It has hosted World Cup races, Juniors World Championships and Juniors/Under 23 European Championships and in particular the “Sei Giorni delle Rose” that was raced for the twenty-third time last August.
The continental event will welcome riders from 25 countries, who will compete in six days of races with 44 titles on offer, equally divided into 22 for the Men’s categories (Juniors and Under 23) and 22 for the Women’s (Juniors and Under 23).
In such a unusual season, the Union Européenne de Cyclisme would like to thank the organisers in Forlì for having done everything in their power to organise the Championships and the organisers in Fiorenzuola d’Arda for the passion and commitment they have shown to prepare to host one of the most important events on the European cycling calendar. We would also like to thank all the National Federations and riders for the way in which they have dealt with this unprecedented and unpredictable season.
The Elite Track European Championships have also been confirmed. They will be held in Plovdiv (Bulgaria) from 11 to 15 November 2020.
