Liggett Joins Lance To Cure Cancer In Cowtown
“During the Tour I bumped into Lance at a hotel, and the first thing he said was: ‘hey, are you coming to Calgary? I want you to be there. They’re really nice people and they raised a sh*tload of money for cutting edge cancer research. You gotta come and experience it.’” – said Phil Liggett of Lance’s request to join him for the Calgary Tour of Courage Society’s fundraiser Sept. 25 & 26.
Phil also told PEZ: “Lance asked me on the Champs Elysees: ‘Have you made your mind up?’” I said, “Yup, I’m comin’.”
“Good” – was Lance’s reply.
After Lance’s ringing endorsement of the event on that famous Parisian boulevard, Phil was on board as the master of ceremonies for the gala dinner on Saturday night, September 25th , and Sunday’s ride over Highwood Pass with Lance, his team, and major donors. Highwood Pass is the highest paved road in the Rockies, and takes in some of the most spectacular scenery anywhere.
”I am pleased to be coming back to Calgary in September,” said Lance, ”I had a wonderful experience on my first visit, and to be able to come back and help out and have a chance to ride in the Rockies is very cool. I am also glad some of my teammates are joining me; these are the guys who give me the chance to win and it will be fitting to be able to tell the story of how teamwork functions to ensure success.”
Last year’s very successful inaugural Calgary Beyond Courage fundraising dinner raised $1.4 million for cancer research. This year, Lance was keen to come back, but was adamant about making this year different and distinct. Let’s see – September in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies – warm fall weather, the colors of autumn spread across the mountain valleys – what to do, what to do…??
Lance Brings His Peeps
For starters – how about inviting along some of Lance’s closest cycling teammates and friends – all personalities in their own right – like Johan Bruyneel, George Hincapie, Chris Carmichael and Phil Liggett. The dinner will celebrate athletic excellence and how, working together, these people took a recovering cancer patient and helped lift him to the top of cycling world, achieving what no one else had ever achieved – sixconsecutive Tour de France victories.
But knowing Lance’s penchant for doing things Texas style – BIG – this year they added a bike ride with Lance over the highest paved road in Canada – the Highwood Pass – to really make the weekend distinct.
HIGHWOOD PASS RIDE: Only 5 Spots Left
The good news is that the day 2 ride of 120km over Highwood Pass with Lance, George, Johan and Phil is sold out and a waiting list started. Now – with invitations being limited to the first 25 people to make a minimum $25,000 donation to the Tour of Courage Society – organizers are extremely pleased to announce that the ride has already sold out! It’s a real testament to Lance’s drawing power and ability to motivate others to join his cause.
The Even Better News is that 5 more spots may be added to this very exclusive ride. Organizers haven’t finalized how the final 5 spots will be awarded, but 5 lucky riders may be chosen from the waiting list of benefactors who pledge a suggested minimum of $25,000CDN.
Lance is one of the most charismatic individuals of our time, and a chance to see him speak at the dinner and contribute to a good cause will be a memory of a lifetime. Tickets are still available for the $500 a plate gala on Saturday night, as well as some VIP tickets to an exclusive pre-dinner reception.
