What's Cool In Road Cycling

SanRemo: Rider Comments & Photos

A brilliant day for Italian cycling, and a brilliant day for Paolo Bettini, winning the World Cup opener in front of the hometown crowd… Here’s what Bettini, Cipollini, Celestino and Diluca had to say…

Bettini: “From the start of the season the whole team has been working for me, but I still didn’t win any one day races. I must say thanks to Paolini, he hasn’t been great, he’s been more than great, wonderful!”

Celestino: “I attacked on the Cipressa really strongly for Di Luca, and then I was feeling fine on the Poggio, so I tried to stay with Bettini and Paolini. Compliments to
him” .

Cipollini: “I showed a great condition today by being always with the best on the Cipressa and Poggio. I must say thanks to the team, for example to Bennati and Ongarato because they closed the gap after the Cipressa. I prepared really well this Milano-Sanremo, but I had too many riders to control, anyway at the sprint I’ve been the fastest. At 36 years old I can I still feel really strong. I wanna send my greetings to Bettini: I’m always happy when a man of the ‘Zolder-team’ wins” .

Di Luca: “I found myself ahead with just Shefer, and so I didn’t have any other men to work for me. Perhaps also because Zanini has been really fast at the start of Poggio. So I tried to get away, but I had the wind in my face and after it…I was ‘cooked’ and I lost Bettini and the others in the downhill” .
