Giro Stg 8: American National Champ Zaps TT!

US National Time Trial Champion Dave Zabriskie showed his stuff today in the Giro stage 8, winning the Individual Time Trial of 45 km with a smoking time of 58 :31.

The course, the first real Contre le Montre of the race, was from Lamporecchio to Firenze (AKA Florence for us Anglophones), and started in a river valley. There was a small climb and then descent before the arrival in Firenze, which did cause some crashes, notably taking down former Australian champ Henk Vogels of Davitamon. Temperatures were good, and there was no wind to fight, so most riders were content with the days conditions.

Passing the first time check at 8.4 km, it was Discovery Channel’s Savoldelli who posted the best time, but perhaps he put in too much too soon, as in the end he was down 44 seconds on Zabriskie, for third place. Zabriskie’s CSC teammate and certain contender for this years Giro, Ivan Basso, came in second with a time of 58:48, just 17 seconds off Zabriskie. Current Pink Jersey wearer Danilo DiLuca gave it a good ride today, and rounded out the top 10 with a ride that was good enough to keep him in pink for tomorrow. However, Bettini was knocked off the charts, and Basso’s 2nd place today puts him in 2nd place on the G.C. only 9 seconds behind DiLuca. In the battle between two riders on the same team, Cunego did better at 16th place at 2:24, than Simoni who finished 23rd, 2:52 behind Dave Z.
