Giro Talk Day 12: After The Zoncolan

What a day! The steepest climb since the Angliru, triple chain rings, a glimpse of Il Pirata – and the “real” Giro d’Italia shaping up – here’s the buzz from the village…

Simoni: “It wasn’t a good day for me. Today I was waiting for any attack, from men who wanted to earn seconds, but it didn’t arrive. So I spurted at 3 kms from the finish line. I wasn’t feeling good, because perhaps I still didn’t recover from the last days. And in the next days we will have again some hard stages. Of course I will try to earn time again. In the last metres I really wanted to go down from my bike and push by walking until the arrive. This hill was hard for a rider like me too”.

Garzelli: “I wanna say thanks to Marco, because we helped each other and he gave me one more stimulus to not lose too much time”.

Pantani: “In this moment, the hard work is bigger than the satisfaction. Anyway I wasn’t waiting for a so good performance. After Terminillo it’s true that I’m pedaling every day better, but for sure I wasn’t waiting for a so good day”.

Casagrande: “At the last 2kms there has been the spurt of Simoni, and I tried to stay with him. But he was too fast for me, and so I could just go up with my step. He was riding very well today. I saw just another one hill hard like this, the Angliru”.

Pellizzotti: “Since the start of this hill, I saw that I wasn’t fast like the leaders, and so I came up with my step. That’s all”.

Today all the best riders were using a 39×28, and just Yaroslav Popovych was using a 39×30. The hardest gear in the top rider’s group has been the one of Scarponi, 39×27. Only team De Nardi-Colpack used a triple. If Mario Cipollini was still into the race, he was going to use a special Mtb, prepared from the Specialized, for him, with of course World Champion’s colors, and a triple ahead set.

Cipollini: “I’m afraid to leave Giro when my condition was growing up. I could win again for sure. Tonight I couldn’t sleep cause of pain in all of my body. My doctor gave me the advice to not start this morning. I hope that LeBlanc will invite me and my team to the Tour de France, for give to my supporters, and to my sponsor, still emotions. I wanna say thanks to my team, that helped me to beat Binda’s record; it has been great. It’s not possible to have a finish so dangerous like yesterday. If I wasn’t going to crash, I could have won because my position was good against the one of McEwen. A welcome back to Marco for his performance today. I think that this is a new start for his career”.
