What's Cool In Road Cycling

Giro Talk Day 15: Rider Comments

Sunday’s Stage 15 TT gave us perhaps the sneak peek at the finishing order of this Giro, but there’s still a tough week left across the north and through the Alps before Milan. Here’s what Gonzalez, Simoni, Garzelli and more had to say after yesterday’s stage …

TerminAitor: “I’m afraid that I arrived at that start of this Giro d’Italia not in a very good condition. As some people said, perhaps I arrived one week late. Anyway my condition is growing now, and I won’t care about the ranking, but I will be just looking for the stages victory. For example tomorrow we will help our team mate Petacchi, to try to win tomorrow’s stage”.

Simoni: “I wasn’t feeling in a super condition today, and for example, my DS Martinelli was telling me at the start to go for a higher speed, but I was already at the max. I got my HR for all the time trial at 185 p/min. This morning I got the chance to try the stage with Maurizion (Fondriest), and he is a maniac of bikes, wheels, gears and so on. So he helped me to choose the right gear. I used a 53×11 as max, and it helped me to have a good pedaling today. Perhaps Garzelli was tired, but you can bet that also I’m
really tired. We had 4 days very hard for us”.

Garzelli: “I must give my compliments to him (Simoni), for his performace. It was 2 years that I did so long atime trial, and so I couldn’t do my best. Perhaps I payed for the last 4 days; very hard days. Now it’s sure that I cannot defend, but if I still wanna win this Giro, I must attack. There will be 2 stages good for a man like me, and in there I’ll play my chances”.

Gonchar: “Today I didn’t have good legs, and I’m not happy with the result. I could win, but in the last kms I got the wind on face”.

Mazzoleni: “Some people said that it was a flat time trial, but it isn’t so. There were some little hills, and it was a very hard time trial”.

Petacchi: “It’s already good that I didn’t broke anything. While I was cycling, after the crash, I felt pain everywhere. To tell the truth, I don’t think I’ll be able to continue, also because at the arrive I wasn’t able to stay up. Anyway we will decide tomorrow morning. Also because tomorrow there will be a flat stage, and so I could have some chances to recover. There was an hole on the road, and it broke the frame. I went
down without having the time to realise it”.

Volpi: “We don’t mind if Petacchi won’t be able to continue, we want him just to be fine, and it’s important that he didn’t break anything. Health before every other thing”.
