Frigo: Pre Giro Thoughts
“I want really much run the Giro and try to win it, I will try to get to the finish with the ability to give everything. I can’t promise anything, because every season is different from the other and so it doesn’t make sense to do comparisons between my condition now and last year. Anyway it’s a good signal the victory at Romandia, with Paris-Nice was one of my two objectives in these first months of activity: in France I didn’t win.. (but), in Switzerland everything has been good, and until now I’m the only Italian who won an hors category race. Unluckily the media seems more interested in what I did in 2001 that what I’m doing now.
The Giro is less difficult than the before, but there are hidden dangers at every stage. In some stages I must defend myself, so I’m happy if the hills come only at the end. The first hill-top finish comes early, at Limone Piemonte, in the 5th stage: the overall ranking could receive a shake. First, instead, for me nothing will happen, also in the stage of Liege: it will be necessary stay at the front, but I don’t think there will be much distance between the favourites.
I’m scared of the stage with the finish at Folgaria, because 20 kms of climbing to the finish is a lot Instead the stage at Corvara in Badia has the Fedaia and Pordoi far from the finish and the last hill is just 4 kms long.
Time trials? The 14th day at Nurmana is important, the other one in Monticello Brianza won’t decide the race as in the last years. Even if there won’t be a little distance between the firsts of the overall ranking, around 15 seconds. A Giro for me? Not only for me, but also for Garzelli and Casagrande”.
