3 Days of De Panne Final – Surprise Winner!
Raivis Belohvosciks is the end-winner of the 3 Days of De Panne. A totally unexpected rider of the Marlux-team shook the whole classement of this tour when he won the time-trial this afternoon. Second overall is Bortolami at1 second. The stage in the morning was won by Steven De Jongh (NL) – RaboBank, second in this tour was Jo Planckaert (B) – Cofidis.
The riders had to start this morning in De Panne at 9 am, for a distance of 110 km, with finish also in De Panne. There was a lot of wind and a cold temperature. From the 181 riders the first morning, there were only 88 at the start today. The reason is that almost the whole peleton is ill.
The second overall, B. Voskamp, fell down this morning and had to leave the race. Further there were no spectacular things in the race. It ended with a sprint from the whole peleton to the finish. J. De Jongh wins before J. Planckaert.
In the afternoon there was a time-trial, so everything could still happen to change the gc. Everybody (the whole Belgian press) hoped and thought that Peter Van Peteghem or Nico Mattan would win these 3 days but it was Belohvosciks who was the fastest rider against the time.
Result of the end-classement :
1. R. Belohvosciks (Let)
2. G. Bortolami (I) 1”
3. P. Van Peteghem (B) 13”
4. O. Pollack (Germany) 14”
5. V. Jekimow (Russia) 17”
6. N. Mattan (B) 20”
7. C. Mengin (Fr) 22”
8. F. Cancellara (I) 25”
9. S. Gontsjar (Oek) 28”
10. M. Wauters (B) 30”
My best cycling-friends, I hope you enjoyed my 3 days report of De Panne, I look forward for Sunday (Tour of Flanders). I’ll give you Saturday a report of the favourites of the Tour of Flanders, but I think it will be an open game because most of the top favourites are sick.
