And The Leader Is… Juan Carlos Domingez!

The surprise winner of today’s Giro d’Italia prologue and first wearer of the famed “maglia rosa”, Team Phonak’s Juan Carlos Domingez won in a time of 8’12”, beating pre-race favourite and prologue specialist Rik Verbrugghe of Lotto by 1 second.

Third on the stage was Paolo Salvodelli of Alexia at 4 seconds, and 4th went to another Phonak rider – Matthias Buxhofer at 0:08 seconds.

Of the race favorites, Stefano Garzelli finished with a time of 8:31, Casagrande was 8:33, and Gilberto Simoni was 8:46.

Other notables included Mario Cipollini in 13th at 8:27, poised to take the leaders jersey in the coming days, Cadel Evans at in 16th with 8:28, and Marco Pantani way off the back at 8:53.
