Bettini Wins Liege!

Paolo Bettini of Mapei has won Liege-Bastogne-Liege, held over 258 km in Belgium today. Bettini beat team mate Stefano Garzelli in a two-up sprint, and late breakaway companion Ivan Basso (Fassa-Bortolo) who finished alone in 3rd several seconds back.

The decisive break occured inside 18 km to the finish when 7 riders broke clear. The group slowy distintigrated until just Bettini, Garzelli, and Basso were alone in front. With 8kms to go, Garzelli put the hammer down and only Bettini could follow, and the two rode into Liege together to contest the sprint.
