Boogerd Wins Brabantse Pijl – Flashes Fine Flanders Form

Holland’s Michael Boogerd (Rabobank), 2001 winner of Brabantse Pijl (for those of you reading in Belgium), has won the 43rd edition of this tough race in front of his Spanish team-mate Oscar Freire, held today over 192.5 km between Beersel and Alsemberg…

Boogerd attacked his three fellow escapees – Freire, Luca Paolini (Quickstep-Davitamon) and Belgium’s Dave Bruylandts (Marlux), and powered away to a hugely impressive win. It’s a result that should give the classy Dutchman a big confidence boost as he prepares to go Classic-hunting over the next month.

Freire, twice champion of the world, gave his team the top two places by outsprinting the remaining breakaways.

Paolini , so impressive in setting up Paolo Bettini’s Milano-San Remo win last week has continued his impressive rise in the pro rankings by making the podium for the second successive weekend, this time in the race some of us know as the Brabanзonne Arrow.

And just so that those of you who speak French don’t feel left out, I’ll drop in a reference to today’s race as Flиche Brabanзonne!

There was a welcome return to form from 2000 World Champion Romans Vainsteins, who finished alone ahead of the bunch at just over 2 minutes behind.

Johan Museeuw, a favorite for Flanders, finished 61st, , almost 7 minutes back. Nevertheless, it was good to see him participate. The Lion of Flanders suffered a knee injury in a heavy fall in last Wednesday’s Dwar’s door Vlaanderen, and his appearance on the start lists for this weekend’s events had been in some doubt.

Besides a second career victory for Boogerd, it’s another big success for Rabobank over the last 24 hours. Another Dutchman, Steven de Jongh, took out a great victory at the E3 Prijs Vlaanderen in Harelbeke on Saturday. This race took many of the Classics favorites over the bergs which will help animate next Sunday’s Ronde van Vlaanderen (Tour of Flanders)
