Rasmussen Takes Stormy Stage

Michael Rasmussen of the CSC-Tiscali team, revelation of the Giro and ex-mountain biker, to-day took a fine victoy in the hardest stage of the Vuelta Ciclista a Burgos. Away on the last climb up to the finish at Lagunas de Neila, Rasmussen was being chased by Heras & Rubiera (US Postal) trying to put Rubiera in the leaders jersey, but also towing Francisco Mancebo (ibanesto.com) up the hill and the overall placeings. With a kilometre to go Mancebo jumped and only Heras could go with him, leaveing Rubiera thinking what could have been. Zarrabeitia finished at 1 minute 38 seconds behind, so now drops to 3rd. overall. As Rasmussen finished the heavens opened with sleet, hail stones & rain, not so nice for the riders in the bus at the back.

With a flat final stage tomorrow, ibanesto.com should manage to add another victory to there domination of the short stage races this year. Castrojeriz to Burgos, 172 kilometres, with one 3rd. cat climb, it should stay together.
