Steels Wins Stage 6 Of Catalunya

The Belgian Tom Steels, of the team Mapei, won the sixth stage of the Volta a Catalunya, beating team mate and favourite for the stage win, Spanish World Champ Oscar Freire, only metres from the home of Spains best ever road sprinter, Miguel Poblet.

Freire could only manage 13th. in the close sprint for the line in Montcada I Reixac after 180,1 kilometres from Llivia in 4 hours 10 minutes 40 seconds. He beat McEwen (Lotto) into second, Baldato (Fassa Bortollo) third, Hondo (Telekom) fourth and Torrant (Jazztel) fifth.

Heras held the overall, with no change, he is still 31 seconds in front of Garmendia (Coast), Perez (Coast) at 44, Zarrabeitia (ONCE) at 51 and Escartin (Coast) at 1 minute.

Tomorrows last stage from Montcada I Reixac to Barcelona is 115,9 kilometres with four climbs to cross, the last one, Alto Del Tibidabo is 450 metres high and 15 kilometres from the finish.
