Italian Championships: Commesso

The 27 year old from Saeco repeats his success of ‘99 in front of Frigo and Casagrande

The new Italian national road race champion is Salvatore Commesso, the 27 year old Napoletano from the Saeco Longoni Sport team that has already won the Tricolore jersey in ‘99.

Commesso ousprinted Dario Frigo (who Wednesday won the time trial national championships) and Francesco Casagrande at the final arrival to San Vendemiano, in Treviso. The three had formed a last circuit escape that the field wasn’t able to pull back. This is the first victory for Commesso in 2002.

“I dedicate this victory to my wife Giusi who couldn’t be here because of an illness. I feel and I believe” explained Commesso at the finish “that this does a lot to reconfirm myself three years after my first success in the Italian national championships. I came out of the Tour of Switzerland in good condition and I felt that I could focus on this win. My season always begins in May, never before. And this 2002 commences with this success”.

Commesso will wear the jersey for 12 months, succeeding Daniele Nardello from Mapei as the national champion.

For the rider from Napoli this is the seventh win of his career: on his palmares, other that two Italian national championships, there are also two stages of the Tour de France.
