What's Cool In Road Cycling

Fernando Escartin To Retire

At a press conference yesterday, Fernando Escartin of the German team Coast, with his wife by his side, announced that he would not be putting on his race shoes again, at the age of 35.

He was never the most stylish riders in the peleton, but he could climb like an eagle. He also didn’t win that much in his career, which spanned 13 seasons and 23 victories, but all were top quality. He rode the Tour 8 times, the Vuelta 6 times & 2 Giros, never finishing outside the top Ten in the Vuelta and only finishing 2 times below 12th in the Tour, he has nothing to be ashamed of.

His finest win must be the Tour stage to Piau Engaly in 1999, then riding for Kelme, t was a mountainous day made for him to attack and solo to victory. He also finished 3rd on that Tour.

Last season he finished a surprise 3rd in a classic, the Championship of Zurich, but not much else, this season he was 8th in the Giro d’Italia.

Adiуs Fernando!
