What's Cool In Road Cycling

Euro-Trash Thursday: Pee-Yow!

Benelux In The Big Time, Albizu To Euskaltel, Verbruggen Vents At Media Exaggeration, Moreau On The Road To Recovery and Cipos Chance For The World Cup, all today in the continental cartel of Euro Trash….

Landbouwkrediet-Colnago In The Big Time
Landbouwkrediet-Colnago (trying saying that 3 times fast when you’re riding at your threshold!) is hoping for a prosperous New Year in the First Division. Manager, Gerard Bulens believes the team can “start 2004 in a very favourable constellation”. With the rising star of former U23 World Champion and Giro D’Italia Podium finisher Yaroslav Popovych supported by the old guard of Ludo Dierckxsens, Tom Steels and Jacky Durand its easy to agree. Bulens also hoped that Durand’s popularity in France may be useful; “who knows, maybe an invitation to start in the Tour of France”. The team clearly has its eyes on the future, and with a talented line-up of young riders, Benelux Frites may be a name you hear more frequently in the coming seasons.

Former Mercatone Uno rider Joseba Albizu has signed for the Basque Euskaltel-Euskadi team. The 25 year old won the Giro del Friuli last in 2003.

Verbruggen Vents At Media Exaggeration
Hein Verbruggen was outspoken in his dissatisfaction with the media with regard to the recent doping issues in France. Speaking at the Liberty Seguros presentation in Madrid, Spain, the president of the UCI rightly identified the fact that only two French riders tested positive. Verbruggen also pointed the finger in other directions stating that “I’ve also seen that there were 45 tennis players on something and I haven’t seen any involvement from the police or politicians there.”

Moreau On The Road To Recovery
After injuring ligaments in his knee whilst avoiding a crash at the recent Credit Agricole training camp, French star Christophe Moreau is beginning to recover. Moreau is said to be working on an indoor trainer for the next ten days before he begins to work more intensively and hopes to begin competition by March.

Cipos Chance For World Cup
After the disappointment of being excluded from the First Division this season, Mario Cipollini’s Domina Vacanze has received one of 18 invitations to participate in all the rounds of this years World Cup. The other 17 teams to be pre-selected by the UCI are Ag2r-Prйvoyance, Alessio-Bianchi, Cofidis, Team CSC, Euskaltel-Euskadi, Fassa Bortolo, FDJeux.com, Gerolsteiner, Illes Balears-Banesto, Lampre, Liberty Seguros, Phonak, Quick.Step-Davitamon, Rabobank, Saeco, T-Mobile and the US Postal Service.
