Di Grйgorio Arrested
On Tuesday’s rest day in Bourg-en-Bresse, officers of the French Central Office against Environmental Damage and Public Health raided the hotel of the Cofidis team and took rider Rйmy Di Grйgorio into custody under the orders of Marseille judge; Annaпck Le Goff who has been working on a doping case for over a year. Two other un-named people were also been detained, one of which was relased later. Di Grйgorio and the other person may be charged in Marseille this week.

The Cofidis team immediately suspended the rider awaiting more information and added that: “If the suspicions are confirmed, he will be sacked on the spot in accordance with the stipulations in his contract and in line with the ethical policy of the team.” Di Grйgorio turned professional for FDJ and was riding for the Astana team in 2011 when the investigation started.

The Astana team has distanced its self from the situation and have issued this press release: “A team spokesperson commented: We are aware of the fact that it is being reported that Remy Di Gregorio (RDG) has been detained for questioning by French Police as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged doping substances trafficking that was opened last year. Whilst RDG was a rider with Pro Team Astana until 2011, he is no longer part of our team so it is inappropriate for us to make any comment.”

What can we take from this? The French were expounding their stance on doping and saying that this was why they didn’t win any more (two speed cycling), but there have been a few cases of young French amateurs being caught in the last couple of years. L’Equipe reports that the case is built around an alleged phone call to drug supplier, so it’s still out there…even in France!

Tour de France 2012
The time trial Stage 9 was always billed as where Bradley Wiggins (Sky) would show how good against the clock he really is. So it was no surprise to see his name at the top of the Result board, but to take 1:43 out of Cadel Evans (BMC) was impressive. The ride of the day has to be from Chris Froome, he lead all the way round (until Wiggins rode) and moved himself from 6th to 3rd place, jumping over Haimar Zubeldia (RadioShack-Nissan), Denis Menchov (Katusha) and Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas-Cannondale). Froome is now 14 seconds behind Evans and, depending on how much team work he has to do for Wiggins, he could move into second overall to repeat his Vuelta a Espaсa result from last year.

Bradley Wiggins had this to say after his winning ride: “I just go out there and concentrate myself and doing the ride. It’s all still a bit of a haze. I’ve won the stage which is almost forgotten about as it was all about the GC and the battle – watching for Cadel, Vincenzo and those guys. I’m just really pleased with the way I put the ride together and mentally the way I put the day together. The noise when I rolled off the ramp was incredible and not letting that phase me in terms of going off too hard. At the moment it’s just relief and I’m proud of myself for doing that. It’s fortunate we’ve got a rest day tomorrow so there’s a bit more time to let it sink in before we are back on the road in two days’ time. We’ll just continue what we’ve been doing since the start. Me and Chris have been riding shotgun for most of the stage. The intention of the start of the race was, as last year when I crashed out we didn’t have a back-up plan. We’ll just continue what we’re doing and keeping Chris there as long as possible. It’s just taking it one day at a time, seeing where we go from here.”

Second placed Chris Froome: “There’s no tactics on days like today,” he said. “Time trials are by far the hardest event in cycling. You just have to go as fast as you can and turn yourself inside out to get the best time possible. In terms of the race information I was getting in my ear, it’s good to know you’re putting in a fast time but then you’ve also got to be careful you’ve not started too fast and overcook it so it’s a very fine line to gauge that effort.

“Bradley’s time was quite a bit faster than mine but I’m really happy with the performance I put in. I gave it everything I had and that’s all I could do. It was a big performance we put in and there could be a bit of a celebration later. There’s still a long way to go before I can start thinking about a podium position, I’ll just take it day by day from here.”

Cadel Evans, second overall summed up his TT: “I rode not my best time trial but certainly not a bad one,” he said. “In comparison to the other time trialists like Fabian Cancellara and Tony Martin and so on, it seems as though I wasn’t so far off the mark. But Sky had two very, very strong riders today. We’ll re-assess the situation day-by-day and of course we don’t give up, that’s for sure,” he said. “There’s still a lot more racing to go before Paris.”

Long time leader; Tony Martin (Omega Pharma – Quick-Step): “At about 4 or 5km I had a flat tire again,” Martin said. “It was again a disappointment. I tried the whole race to keep on fighting even if it wasn’t so easy to maintain the concentration and motivation. I could feel the pain in my hand every hole I hit. I was lucky the roads were not too bad so I was OK. But, I still have pain and today I was riding without protection, so it was even harder. It’s unbelievable so much bad luck happens to me, but I think it’s not something we have to think about. We have to keep looking to the future. It’s not a time to be disappointed.”

Lampre-ISD team leader, Michele Scarponi finished 53rd at 4:50, said: “I think I pedalled at a good pace on the two hills and on the fast downhill’s that mixed a course that was very suitable for time trial specialists – Scarponi explained – In the final part, I suffered and the quality of my performance decreased. Tomorrow, in the rest day, I’ll think about the next stages and how to approach them.”

Stage 9 TT highlights by RaboSport TV:

After Tuesday’s rest day it was back to work for the riders on Stage 10 from Mвcon to Bellegarde sur Valerine. A dangerous break of 24 riders went up the road today, but as it didn’t have any overall contenders it was allowed to gain 8 minutes at one point. Thomas Voeckler (Europcar) attacked the group with 1.7 kilometres to go and even though it looked like Luis Leon Sanchez (Rabobank), Jens Voigt (RadioShack-Nissan) or Michele Scarponi (Lampre-ISD) would pull the brave Frenchman back, he stuck it out for the stage win. Behind the break Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas-Cannondale) rode away from the other overall hopefuls on the Grand Colombier and press home is advantage on the descent. Sky had to chase, but put an end to the Italian attempt before the Col de Richemond, the final climb of the day. Cadel Evans (BMC) also put pressure on the leader; Bradley Wiggins towards the finish, but kept under control. Lotto-Belisol’s Jurgen Van Den Broeck did manage to gain 32 seconds on the other GC men with a late attack, which moved him up to 8th overall. Thomas Voeckler is now the mountains leader.

The overall leader; Bradley Wiggins (Sky): “We were fortunate that we got the right breakaway away,” said Wiggins afterwards. “We were prepared to lose the jersey if need be to [Michele] Scarponi who was the best-placed up there. This is about being in yellow in Paris and if that means sacrificing the next days and keeping the boys back a bit [then so be it]. Fortunately that came back once we hit the climb and we kept the jersey. I was waiting for Nibali to start playing his joker card and he did. Fortunately he went solo and we knew he’d have to have some good legs to stay clear on the next climb and then down into the valley. We do have to gamble a little bit here and we can’t just chase everything that moves. We didn’t panic and we got down and rode hard on the next climb and got him back. It all worked out.”

Cadel Evans (BMC) commented on the Sky team: “Sky really has the team for this course and this situation,” Evans said. “So it leaves the opportunities few and far between. And with the wind and the climb that far from the finish, it was a bit difficult today.” Evans added: “You have to make opportunities for yourself, tomorrow, I think the attacking riders will be more rewarded. But we’ll have to see how the other teams react to the race.”

Second on the stage; Michele Scarponi (Lampre-ISD) explained his day: “It was my aim to try to do something good in these stages in the Alps, maybe I would have chosen tomorrow stage, but this morning a breakaway began and, thanks to the support by Hondo, I could join it. I had good feelings so I tried to obtain the victory. I managed the energies and then I raised the pace on Col du Grand Colombier in order to select the attackers group. In the final kilometre, I chose to wait for Luis Leon Sanchez to move, I really thought he would have reacted to Voeckler’s attack. Unluckily for me, the Spaniard waited too long and so I had to try a difficult recovery. It’s a pity, but this stage will give me morale to try again to attack”.

Jurgen Van den Broeck: “I tried up to three times to attack. Sky was maintaining a tight tempo, by which it wasn’t evident to try something, but there won’t be so very many chances in this Tour anymore to undertake action. And by going just before the top, I was in front every time to begin the descent. Together with Rolland I tried to make the gap with the group as big as possible, but that small climb in the end was still tough. I did everything I could, as I said beforehand.”

As Euskaltel-Euskadi team leader; Samuel Sanchez has abandoned it has been up to Egoi Martнnez to get in the action. Finishing 7th today he said “I am a veteran of the team and was asked me to pull the group. I assume it is normal and my responsibly. My colleagues have worked very well. Gorka, Rubйn and Jorge have been covering the holes and Pablo has been the one who got me into in the final flight. Our role now is to be in the breakaways and fight for a stage win and we will do our best.”

Matt Lloyd Abandons the Tour
Australian Matthew Lloyd of Lampre-ISD would not be starting Wednesday’s stage 10 due to the head of radius of his left elbow being broken. Lloyd crashed in the early kilometres of the 8th stage, Belfort to Porrentruy.

“At the arrival in Porrentruy, I thought the elbow could be broken, but Matthew wanted to take part in the time trial in order to wait for the rest day to undergo the necessary medical checks” Doctor Beltemacchi from Team Lampre-ISD explained. “The head of the radius is broken, so Matthew is forced to quit the race. His arm must to be fixed for 8 days, and then he’ll be able to start a light mobilization”.

Matt explained: “I’m really sad to quit the Tour de France after a bad first part and just before the stages that would suit me better. I would have given my support to the team and to Michele. This morning I had pain in the elbow, so I’m not surprised it’s broken. I’ll wait to recover and I’ll try to be ready for the Vuelta a Espaсa”.

Yorkshire Tour Start?
The English County of Yorkshire want to host a Grand Depart of the Tour de France sometime soon and maybe their hope took a step forward at the end of Monday’s time trial stage in Besanзon. The Yorkshire town of Kirklees (near Huddersfield) is twinned with Besanзon and it is the birthplace of Britain’s first ever Tour stage winner; Brian Robinson. Robinson and GB team mate Tony Hoar were the first Brit’s to finish a Tour de France back in 1955. As well as the Yorkshire bid, the Scottish capital city of Edinburgh want to show case its sights with a Tour Grand Depart. It would be difficult for any town to compete with Edinburgh, ask any tourist who has visited the Castle, Royal Mile, Holyrood Palace and all the other historic parts of the “Athens of the North.”

Lotto-Belisol and their “Explorer”
For month’s potential Tour candidates explore the Alps, Pyrenees, Vosges, Ardennes, time trials and finishes. Hardly anything escapes the attention, everything is written down, even filmed, so the rider can review a climb or descent whenever he wants, until he’s able to assess every turn and has assessed every steep part.

Still, not every meter can be explored. And still, every detail can be important: a refuge, a narrow or a busy passage or a gust of wind. That’s why Lotto Belisol sends out an explorer. Someone who drives about half an hour or an hour ahead of the race, and after the publicity caravan, and who is in constant communication with the cars in the race.

Since this year Mario Aerts is one of the sports directors of Lotto Belisol. With more than fifteen years of experience in the pro peloton and ten attendances at the Tour de France he perfectly knows what predominates in the peloton and for the riders.

Mario Aerts: “We cover the whole route. No way we race through the stage; the Tour organization ASO is very strict about reckless driving behavior of cars outside the race. Doctor Mathieu sits in the car with me and is the messenger on duty. Everything we notice is being signaled to the cars in the race. In the meantime we watch the riders, who are about 30 to 40 kilometers behind us, on the televisions in the car. The last five kilometers we analyze very detailed. There is a banner every kilometer, even the distance between each kilometer is checked, to see if a banner isn’t placed 100 meters too soon or too far. So that for example the sprint train can be perfectly put on the rails.”

“One anecdote: teams from the Low Countries are known not to recoil from making a solid fan. Yesterday there were certain parts that were suited for that. One problem: there was hardly any wind. We pulled over up to three times to gauge for a strayed gust of wind, but that didn’t come.”

Tony Martin Out of Tour de France
Press Release: Tony Martin will not take the start of the 10th stage of Tour de France tomorrow. In agreement with the team sport management and the team medical staff, Martin will return at home this afternoon.

“Tony’s impressive performance in the last days, going through all the pain and still fighting to be able to compete in the individual TT, shows what kind of character he has,” team doctor Helge Riepenhof said.” But from the medical point of view, it is now time to give the scaphoid fracture a chance to heal. We also have to avoid further issues to his body because of being limited in his movement while wearing a brace. This is the only possible decision to be able to perform at the London Olympics without damaging structures such as the lower back or knees.”

“It’s difficult for me to step out of the Tour and leave my teammates here to keep on fighting,” Martin said. “But it’s the right thing to do now, and I know that even the guys will understand. I will go home and I will try to recover as much as I can. I don’t want things to get even worse going into the mountains. I cannot imagine sitting in the back of the peloton suffering every day a little bit more as I did during this week. I really tried, I put a lot of energy together with the team to arrive until today, but now it’s time to think about my complete recovery. I have still three weeks before the Olympics. I know that it won’t be easy, but I will do all my best to be in good shape for the Olympics. I wish all the best to my teammates and I thank the whole team for the great and professional help they gave me in this difficult week.”

Viganт Under the knife
Yesterday (Monday) evening Davide Viganт underwent surgery in Clinica Santa Rita in Vercelli in order to fix a plate on his fractured collarbone. Lampre-ISD’s cyclist had crashed in the 6th stage of Tour de France. The surgery was performed by Doctor Sella and it was deemed positive: 20 days of prognosis.

Tour de Pologne 2012
The Polish Tour has its usual top class field contesting its seven stages from Golebiewski to Krakуw starting Tuesday 10th and finishing on Monday the 16th of July. Stage 1 to Jelenia Gуra over 179 kilometres came down to a sprint won by Moreno Moser (Liquigas-Cannondale) from Michal Kwiatkowski (Omega Pharma – Quick-Step) and Lars Boom (Rabobank). Earlier in the stage there was a crash on a rain soaked descent causing Niki Terpstra to be hospitalised, Tom Boonen also crashed but managed to finish the stage, although he needed x-rays to exclude any fractures. He does have pain in his back because of the crash. Boonen later said: “We were on a downhill,” Boonen said. “Brown crashed ten spots in front of us and Sabatini, who was behind him, panicked a little bit. He hit his brakes and he went on the ground. I went over him and I got caught up with his handlebars. Niki was on my wheel and he couldn’t avoid the crash. Apparently I have no fracture, even if it is hard to breathe. I will try tomorrow; I hope everything will be fine. I have to go to the end to be ready for the Olympics.”

Stage winner and overall leader Moreno Moser said after the race: “I knew that today’s stage, on a repetitive, climbing circuit and the slight uphill arrival, could be suited to my skills,” says Moser. “On the last lap the group was strong on the climb and the selection started coming out, the breakaway was caught up and the sprinters took off. There were 35-40 riders left in the final sprint and I gave it my all to catch up to Kolobnev, who was ahead, and to keep everyone else behind me, and I did it.”

Stage 2 was won by Ben Swift of the Sky team in a bunch sprint from Elia Viviani (Liquigas-Cannondale) and in third place Tom Boonen (Omega Pharma – Quick-Step), the new Belgian champion. Earlier in the stage a four man break of Lukasz Bodnar & Damian Walczak (Polish Nat Team), Adrian Kurek (Utensilnord Named) and Diego Caccia (Farnese Vini-Selle Italia). Bodnar was the first to give up with 50 kilometres to the finish in Opole in the longest stage of the tour at 240 kilometres. The other three were caught as Rabobank were setting up Lars Boom for the win, but the Sky lead-out train was to good for the Dutch team, taking Swift to the line. Liquigas-Cannondale rider Moreno Moser held the overall lead.

Stage winner Ben Swift: “It was brilliant. We made the call to save our legs for the lead out – if we needed to we were going to put someone on the front but the guys did a perfect job looking after me and got me right into position.

“It was unbelievable at the end; (Juan Antonio) Flecha did a hell of a lot of work to move us all into position around that circuit and then (Ian) Stannard just went for it – I think the cobbles excited him! And then Mat Hayman did a massive turn to get me almost right to the line.”

Third placed Tom Boonen: “On the last corner I turned in 10th position,” Boonen said. “I had to wait a little bit to launch my sprint because I was boxed in. It was uphill, so I came very fast, but a little bit too late. I had to close the gap. Anyway things are better today. I wanted to try immediately today to try to win, so I could understand how it was after the crash. I’m happy about the answer I had. I would also like to congratulate Dries on his performance today at the Tour de France. It was great.”

HotChillee opens entries to the 10th edition of The London-Paris 2013
Press Release: The London-Paris 2013 will take place on 20th to 23rd June 2013. This marks the tenth year of the hugely popular event from HotChillee and entries will again be restricted to 450 places, which in previous years have sold-out within seconds. Due to this high level of demand there will be a limited number of early-bird guaranteed entries available from midday (BST) on Tuesday 17th July 2012 at www.londres-paris.com. These are on a first come, first served basis. Ballot places will also be available from this date and will close at the end of July, with successful riders being notified by 13 August 2012.

The London-Paris 2013 also has 35 team entries with 4 riders per team available. Those with an interest in a team place should contact [email protected] and all team places will be allocated by the 24th August 2012.

The London-Paris is a must-do event on the cycling calendar, being broadcast on Eurosport each year. Cycling enthusiasts, professionals, legends and celebrities all cycle together in the peloton. Very few sporting events allow enthusiasts to ride with the sport’s legends, making The London-Paris unique. The event has motorbike outriders, rolling road closures in France, lead vehicles and mechanical support.

Next year will be the 10th London-Paris with a special Anniversary Edition planned.

The recent 2012 start-line saw an array of stars, including cycling legend Stephen Roche who was celebrating the 25th anniversary of his Triple Crown Win (The Tour de France, The Giro d’Italia and The World Championships). As part of the celebrations he rode his fully restored Tour de France winning bike into Paris with the 450 other riders on The London-Paris.

Other cycling legends included Tour de France hero and 1988 World Champion Maurizio Fondriest, current professional cyclist Magnus Backstedt, Paracycling double World Champion and Olympic team member Colin Lynch and professional German National mountain-biker Karl Platt – who’s won the Trans Alp 7 times and the Absa Cape Epic four times. Formula One legend Nigel Mansell, Rugby Heroes Joel Stransky and Will Carling, former professional footballers Geoff Thomas and John Salako and former Olympic medallist and athletics World champion Sonia O’Sullivan were also part of the peloton.

The Dolomiti Classic-TMC-Arabba Improves Security and Technical Assistance for the Race
Press Release: The route doesn’t change, but there will be increased security measures and free technical assistance in the race. Based on experience gained in previous editions, in fact, the Dolomiti Classic-TMC-Arabba has decided to adopt specific solutions so all athletes can complete both the gran fondo (135 km) as well as the medio fondo (80 km) in the best way possible.

Numerous civil protection volunteers will be present in strategic points along the route. Four fixed refreshment points will be set up at the top of every pass crossed by the race, plus three set points for technical assistance will be situated respectively on passo Duran, passo Staulanza and passo Giau: all will be equipped with everything necessary (wheels, inner tubes, chains, tyres and assorted parts) to help competitors in case of flats or mechanical problems.

There will be two to four mobile units. A car and a motorcycle for the long route and a car and motorcycle for the medio fondo route. The cars will follow the head of the race while the motorcycles will continuously be on the move within the peloton to cover the central and final parts of the race as well. To request intervention all you have to do is stop at the side of the road and raise your hand or contact the phone number for the organisation which will be supplied to all the participants with their race package.

Another great new element will be the presence of a mechanic on board the sweeper car which as usual will recuperate those athletes in trouble and their bikes.

Scott Thwaites Wins British Cycling Premier Calendar Road Race Series
Press Release: Scott Thwaites sealed victory in the 2012 British Cycling Premier Calendar Road Race Series at the Stockton Grand Prix on Sunday with one round of the series still to come. Thwaites has been the dominant rider in the UK this year, adding the Premier Calendar to the British Circuit Race Championships and individual wins in the Halfords Tour Series, where he was an integral part of Endura Racing’s overall series victory. Still just 22 years old and in his third season with the team, Scott has developed into a true all rounder, with a devastating sprint to deliver victories in criteriums and road races.

In the seven race Premier Calendar series, Scott backed up wins at the Tour of the Reservoir and a stage win at the Tour Doon Hame with a consistent set of results in the other rounds. Finishing a close second to Raleigh-GAC’s Graham Briggs on Sunday was enough to secure the series by healthy margin. Team commitments in Europe will mean that Endura Racing will miss the final round of the series, the recently announced Wilton Grand Prix, as they head to Vuelta Ciclista a Leуn (UCI 2.1) in Spain and La Mi-Aoыt en Bretagne (UCI 2.2) in France.

Scott Thwaites: “I’m very pleased to win the Premier Calendar Series, it’s a big achievement for me as there are so many strong racers in the UK at the moment. It’s perfect sewing up the series win with one round still to go as we’ll be racing abroad then and we won’t have to rely on other rider’s results at the Winton Grand Prix to settle things.”

“I’ve enjoyed all of the rounds this year. You can’t just rely on your winning a round, you have to be consistent right through the series and that’s something I’ve been able to do. If I had to pick my favourite moments, it was obviously winning the Tour of the Reservoir, but equally important to me was riding across to the break in the final stage of the Tour Doon Hame, as it showed that I’m not just a sprinter but an all-rounder.”

Action packed summer continues for Rapha Condor Sharp
Press Release: Despite the frenetic activity of the Halfords Tour Series being well and truly over, with the commencement of the National Circuit Series, and the resumption of the Premier Calendar, it has been a busy two weeks for the Rapha Condor Sharp team.

While the rest of the Rapha Condor Sharp riders were getting involved in the action at the Leazes Criterium, where Richard Lang scored a popular first UK win, Felix English became the second Rapha Condor Sharp rider to win a national title in 2012, when he took out the Irish National Criterium Championships.

English made the most of the wet conditions and technical course to attack the race hard from start, and eventually broke clear alone with twenty minutes of the one-hour race to go. English will now wear the distinctive white and green jersey throughout the summer criterium action.

Previous to English’s win in the Irish Championships, the National Circuit Series had got underway in Brighouse, with former series winner Dean Downing once again spearheading the team’s challenge with a fine second place to series rival Raleigh GAC’s Graham Briggs.

It was former Rapha Condor Sharp rider Briggs who would again take the win in the second round of the series, the Claremont Hospital sponsored Stafford Grand Prix, while Downing, caught out by a fast start and treacherously wet roads, missed the break and sprinted home in 7th on the night.

Soaking wet roads were once again a feature at the third round of the series in Stockton, in conditions described by some as the worst they had ever seen for a criterium. The racing once again got underway from the gun, with the riders on the front of the grid trying to take maximum advantage of the difficult conditions straight away.

Downing struggled on the night and instead it was the Aussie duo of Lang and Grenda, as well as Scottish National Road Race Champion, James McCallum who made sure RCS riders packed out the top ten.

In the Premier Calendar road race action, Rapha Condor Sharp played a decisive role in the Beaumont trophy, when, having only placed one rider in the large move that had slipped away from the bunch, under the instructions of team manager John Herety, the team showed impressive discipline to pull back a the 11 man move that had looked for a long time like it would survive to the finish.

The work from the ‘men in black’ proved effective enough to neutralize the break on the last lap of the finish circuits. The race came down to a bunch gallop at the end of the 85-mile race where Tasmanian Ben Grenda sprinted in to a fine 7th place, his second top ten in the series in 2012.

Grenda was again in the action at the Stockton Festival Premier Calendar, where for the second week in a row the race came down to a small bunch finish.
After a break that contained newly crowned Under 23 Road Race Champion Mike Cuming had been reeled in on the final circuit in Stockton on Tees, Grenda, along with Richard Lang, who continues to show signs great form, took 9th and 10th respectively in the penultimate round of the series.

The final round of the 2012 Premier Calendar will be the Wilton Grand Prix on the 12th of August and the team will be looking to profit from some scheduled racing in Belgium throughout July.
