Stage 20: Furlan Scores Twice!

Furlan Scores Twice!
Vuelta Stage 20: Avila – Warner Bros. Park 142 km

20 down – 1 to go – and it was flat.

Italian team Alessio’s Angelo Furlan scored his second stage win in 4 days, edging countryman Alessandro Petacchi (Fassa), and Telekom’s uber-sprinter Erik Zabel. The sprint finish came as expected, after a mostly flat run-in to the Warner Bros. theme park, which was marked by the usual lone bid-for-glory – this time by Relax’s Oscar Laguna who led for 127km. Zabel has been shut out of victories this Vuelta, and must be looking forward to the end of the season.

Overall, nothing changed, and with the top 4 riders all within 2:09 of each other, tomorrow’s final stage TT should be a real “cracker” – (to quote a PCN’s certain Scottish journalist.) Heras will be riding balls-out to win his second Vuelta, and reclaim some glory after last year’s let downs. Same can be said – as far as riding style is concerned – for Aitor Gonzalez – who beat Heras by 1:34” over 50km in the Stage 10 TT. He’s got to be pumped for speed. And both Sevilla and Beloki can roll with the best – they’ve proven it – so expect a great finish to this great race.

Until then – hasta luego!
