What's Cool In Road Cycling

Garzelli “Ready” For Giro

– Reported by Mapei –
At exactly a week before the start of the Tour of Italy, Stefano Garzelli has gained his first victory of the season winning the 26th Grand Prix Industria e Artigianato of Larciano. The powerful MAPEI-Quick Step rider, who finished in second place at the Liege-Bastogne-Liege, made his ‘attack’ along with Giuliano Figueras and Francesco Casagrande during the final San. Baronto up-hill section. These three race leaders gained a good advantage over the chasers group and carefully affronted the descent leading to the finish line, as the road surface was very slippery due to rain. Figueras was the first rider to start the final sprint but Garzelli was hot on his wheels and did an excellent job at passing him 100 metres from the finish line. The winner of the 2000 Tour of Italy crossed the finish line with his arms reaching up to the sky with joy. “This win – explains Garzelli – has really boosted my spirits especially as the Tour of Italy is just around the corner. I’d like to thank the rest of the team; today they rode the race for me. I’m in excellent condition and ready for the Tour”.
