Garzelli Takes Liege Stage!

Stefano Garzelli of Mapei has just won the second stage of the Giro, a 199km run from Cologne to Liege. Garzelli won a tough sprint against several riders including Fassa-Bortolo’s Francesco Casagrande, who was the main protagonist attacking at 9km to go and setting the stage for the final sprint.

Paolo Bettini suffred bike trouble near the end while battling in the front group and lost several seconds on the day.

The maglia rosa will now rest on Garzelli’s shoulders as well, as Mario Cipollini got blown out on the final climbs near Liege, and finished several seconds back of the leaders.
