What's Cool In Road Cycling

Gibo Meets Zoncolan!

Perhaps not in the same league as Godzilla Versus Megalon, or even The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (for a ll you Don Knotts fans out there…) but then we’re not talking cheese here…!

Today Gilberto Simoni tried the most difficult stage of 2002 Giro, the 12th stage, San Donа di Piave-Monte Zoncolan, 185 kms. Simoni wanted to see last hill, 13 kms with a medium slope of 9% and max of 22% and a gap of 1196 metres. With him were his team mates
Leonardo Bertagnolli, Juan Fuentes and Damiano Cunego. The weather was horrible, so they haven’t been able to do all the hill, anyway Gibo got his idea about the hill: “I’m not able to do a confrontation with other important hills, even if the comparison with the
final of Angliru at the Vuelta de Espana is difficult to me. It’s sure that the last kms of Zoncolan will be fatal for us riders and at the finish of it many riders will lose a lot of minutes, also because we don’t know which weather we will find. For the supporters it will be a great show, also because it’s inside the green and it seems
designed for the people who want to see the real Giro.
