Giro del Veneto: Di Luca Returns to Victory

– Reported by Datasport.it –

The 74th edition of the Giro del Veneto has been won by the Saeco strongman Danilo Di Luca. The blonde cyclist outsprinted the Swiss Laurent Dufaux (Alessio) and Davide Rebellin (Gorelsteiner). These three were part of a 5 man break, along with Casagrande and Rasmussen, who attacked in the last part of the race and arrived at the finish with an advantage of 15” over a group of chasers.

The champion from Pescara has given his team a much needed win after the recent near misses by himself and teammate Igor Astarloa at Hamburg, San Sebastian, and Zurich. After a good showing at the Trittico Lombardo (Best was a second place in the Tre Valle Varesini), Di Luca arrived to the start line of the Giro del Veneto hungry for his sixth success of this season.

It was a difficult course and, like predicted, the winning move came on the climb of the Roccolo. The attack was initiated by Di Luca and it created a leading group of 5 who arrived at the final sprint together.

“It’s a great satisfaction – commented Di Luca – that I think I’ve already earned in these recent races that I’ve disputed. The team was great, like always, and I can’t complain at all about my form. The Giro del Veneto was the last test before the Vuelta a Espana, where we of the Saico-Longoni Sport go with big ambitions. Simoni is focused on the classification, I on certain stages. It’s an ideal moment for our team, and we want it to last as long as possible”.
