Hessen Rundfarht: Stage 1

– By Gordon Cameron –

The first leg of the German stage race Hessen Rundfarhrt (UCI 2.3) from Wiesbaden to Schwalmstadt over 190km has been won by Germany’s Olaf Pollack, from the Gerolsteiner team. The stage ended in a massed sprint finish after the remnants of a long breakaway were swept up.

It was a near-miss for Denmark’s Team CSC-Tiscali who saw their sprinter Julian Dean edged for the win. Speaking on CSC-Tiscali.com, team DS Christian Andersen said: “Julian Dean was beaten by Olaf Pollack on the line. The team carried him all the way to the line and I am convinced that he is strong enough to take a stage win down here. The team that supports him is very strong”.

There was an encouraging performance from 22-year-old stagiaire (apprentice), Frank Schleck, racing for the first time in CSC-Tiscali colours with Andersen noting: “Schleck was among the front riders on the only serious climb of the stage. It is going to be interesting to see what he is made of”.

The 2nd stage runs over 172 km from Schwalmstadt to Hanau. The race ends in Frankfurt on Sunday.
