Pantani Sentenced: 8 Month Suspension
For the cyclist from the Mercatone Uno squad a heavy blow that could finish his career
Eight months of suspension for Marco Pantani. This is the decision of the Disciplinary Commission of the Italian cycling federation in view of the syringes of insulin that were discovered in a hotel room that
Pantani had used during the Giro d’Italia 2001 after the stage to Montevarchi.
Pantani will also be forced to pay 3,000 euros while Mercatone Uno will be forced to pay 5,000 euros in fines. The anti doping prosecutors had asked for a year long suspension, but was reduced because of the defense’s claim that there was no proof that the
syringes were found in a room that Pantani had actually stayed in.
Pantani’s lawyers, who had already announced they would appeal if the court ruled against them, also presented Professor Giovanna Berti Donini from the University of Ferrara who stated that between the
confiscation of the syringes (27 May 2001) and the analysis ( 7 September 2001) there could have been contamination of the evidence and that there still could be an examination of DNA to prove that Marco Pantani is indeed innocent.
