L’Avenir: Pozzato Wins Stage 1

– Reported by Team Mapei –

The first stage of the race that has launched many talented riders such as Laurent Fignon and Miguel Indurain welcomed today the success of one of today’s promising young riders, Filippo Pozzato.

21-year-old Filippo, who rides for the MAPEI-Quick Step Team won today the opening Timed stage of the Tour de L’Avenir. The race took place over a distance of 9 kilometres in and around Saint-Grйgoire in Brittany. Filippo beat by just 11 hundredths of a second Bradley Wiggins of the La Francaise des Jeux team, flying across the finish line at more than 50 kilometres per hour. The Team’s excellent performance today was also thanks to Evgueni Petrov who finished in 3rd place just 60 hundredths of a second behind his team mate Pozzato. “I am very pleased with this result – explains Pozzato – It certainly won’t be easy defending this shirt. The next 5 stages will be difficult to control; the French plains certainly aren’t that flat and I’m sure there will be lots of fan formations around. Petrov and myself will definitely be doing our very best to be up front along with the best. I’ve done a lot of work in improving myself in Chronometer stages; I also did quite well at the Italian Championships for this speciality. I just hope that this result helps me in being able to do well and hope for an Italian National Jersey at the World Championships. We’d like to dedicate today’s winning of the Yellow Jersey to Dr. Squinzi. We are sorry that we’ll not have the time to gain a winner’s shirt for him at the Tour de France”.
