Long-Shot Lunghi: Giro Stage 12

Team Colpack’s Denis Lunghi won today’s 12th stage of the Giro, a 201 km leg from Campobasso to Chieti. Lunghi won alone by almost 40 seconds after spending almost 70km at the front in various breaks. Today’s race was marked by the withdrawal from the event of Saeco’s Gilberto Simoni (3rd on gc) and Mercatone Uno’s Roberto Sgambelluri on dope-related circumstances, which probably took some of the steam out of the peloton, allowing for lesser known riders to go for some glory.

Lunghi attacked his breakaway companions with 30 km to go, and built a lead to defeat Bert Grabsch (Ger-Pho) and Lorenzo Bernucci (Ita-Lan). Overall classifications remained mostly unchanged, at least until tomorrow when the race finished atop the climb to San Giacomo at 1105 meters.

Stage 12 results:
1. Denis Lunghi (Ita-Cpk) 5.38.16
2. Bert Grabsch (Ger-Pho) +0.37
3. Lorenzo Bernucci (Ita-Lan) +0.38
4. Alessandro Bertolini (Ita-Als) +0.54
5. Matthias Buxhofer (Aut-Pho) +st

Giro Overall Standings
1. Jens Heppner (Ger-Tel) 58.40.30
2. Francesco Casagrande (Ita-Fas) +2.58
3. Paolo Savoldelli (Ita-(Ina) +3.43
