Mapei Says: Change The Tour Rules

– Reported by Datasport.it –

“At the tour there needs to be the top 20 teams in the world rankings”.

The provocation thrown forward by Santoni, the patron of the Acqua&Sapone squad, to boycott the 2003 Tour de France has not been met favorably by Mapei-Quick Step, said the team manager Alvaro Crespi.

“Boycotting the Tour will achieve nothing. The truth is that there are rules and those who follow them get results. We could, however, work to change these rules, to give more power to the teams and keep the organizers of the great races from taking certain types of decisions. Create a league of cyclists? That could be a solution, especially for changing the rules. We could meet and discuss it. I believe that in a race of such importance at the Tour de France, only the top 20 teams in the world rankings should be invited. This would need to be the first rule to introduce.”
