What's Cool In Road Cycling

Mapei Team For Giro

A brilliant season start for the MAPEI Professional Cycling Team – Quick Step: in four months of competition the team`s racers have racked up 45 wins; 18 successes were achieved by the “Top Team,” thanks to the contribution of 10 athletes and from 1 chronometer win as a team.

Paolo Bettini is currently the team`s multiple winner with 5 first places. Moreover, the team with the cube-patterned jerseys reconquered the summit of the U.C.I. team rankings with the “Top Team” and leadership in the World Cup team rankings. The riders of the “Young Riders” also showed themselves to be a tight-knit winning team, conquering 27 races on the U.C.I. calendar at every latitude with 9 different racers including 2 new professionals. Worthy of mention are Filippo Pozzato`s explosion, (8 wins since the beginning of the season) and the reconfirmation of the Swiss Fabian Cancellara, winner of 5 competitions.

The “Young Riders” has solid control over the U.C.I. team ranking reserved for GSIIIs. The most satisfying competitions were in the Classics, thanks to the World Cup win by Andrea Tafi, once again the Gladiator at the Tour of Flanders and to the splendid double at the Liиge-Bastogne-Liиge by Paolo Bettini and Stefano Garzelli, first and second, respectively, at the Ans finish line. If this was a second personal best for “The Cricket” of the MAPEI – Quick Step, coming two years after his first victory, for Stefano Garzelli, the champion of altruism, the “Doyenne” represented an important, positive verification of the work he`s done towards his great season objective, the Giro d’Italia.

So, in anticipation of next year`s assault on the Ardennes, Garzelli is leaving for Holland with the attention of repeating the success he achieved in 2000. The MAPEI – Quick Step`s 28 year old will be supported by a high quality formation, balanced and dependable for every phase of the course; Andrea Noи and the new comers Dario Cioni and Cadel Evans will have the task of staying alongside Garzelli in the steepest sections. There will be two long-distance riders in the captain`s service, the experts Davide Bramati and Paolo Fornaciari; a broader role will be played by Paolo Bettini, and Italian Champion Daniele Nardello, while the man of reference for the final sprints will be Robert Hunter.Team MAPEI – Quick Step will be directed in the flagship by Roberto Damiani, alongside of whom Serge Parsani and Fabrizio Fabbri will alternate.
