What's Cool In Road Cycling

Mario Takes #4 – Giro Stage 15

Super-Mario Cipollini won today’s rain-soaked 15th stage of 143km from Terme Euganee to Conegliano at the foot of the Dolomites. This is his 4 stage win this Giro, and now places him only 3 short of Alfredo Binda’s Giro record of 41 wins.

The day-long downpour kept things quiet in the bunch all day, and even slowed down the finish, as riders slipped around the tight corners of the finishing circuit, struggling to stay upright. Cipo won easily of Kelme’s Lopes and Fassa’s Alessandro Petacchi.

The main positions on GC did not change today as the officials shortened of the finish line by 12 km to just before the start of 3 finishing circuits, which were deamed to dangerous in the wet conditions for a frenzied pack.

Tomorrow starts the real battle for the win, as the race heads into the high mountains between Italy and Austria.
