What's Cool In Road Cycling

Angel Vicioso Wins Stage 2 And Takes Lead In Pais Vasco

A much calmer day to-day, after yesterdays excitement of all the teams trying to dominate. All the work was left to overall leader, Iban Mayo’s Euskaltel-Euskadi team, a small early break was brought back in time for a bunch sprint.

Two riders went up the road 50 kilometres from the start, Jordi Riera (Kelme) and Guerra (Relax) built up a lead of 4 minutes maximum. With 50 kilometres to go they had 2 minutes 45 seconds over the main bunch with Massimo Lelli (Cofidis) and Andrea Tonti (Saeco) 1 minute 55 behind them, and closeing.

The four got together with 43 kilometres to the finish in Plentzia. They started the finish loop of 26 kilometres with 1:44 in hand on a fast bunch. They were caught on the un-graded climb 10 kilometres from the line, up the last 3 kilometres riders from CSC, Telekom, Paternina, Gerolstiener and Saeco all gave it a go, but came to nothing.

Through the suburbs of Plentzia, Telekom and Saeco were doing the lead-out work for Kessler (Telekom) and Igor Astarloa (Saeco). Kessler could’nt follow the pace and Vicioso (ONCE) took advantage to close on Astarloa for a foto finish. It came out in Vicioso’s favour and he took over the overall lead because of his 2nd. place yesterday.

Tomorrows stage 3 is 191 kilometres from Plentzia to Vittoria/Gasteiz,not much in the way of hills, La Barrerilla, a second cat. and twice over Zaldiaran, a third cat.
