What's Cool In Road Cycling

Pais Vasco: Stage 3, 3rd. Overall leader, Now It’s Alejandro Valverde

All the top men were watching each other to-day on stage three of the Vuelta al Pais Vasco. With so many on the same time overall it was perfect for a small break away to succeed, it nearly did!

The team leaders, to-day, were all waiting for the next man to make a move, so when a group of four went away at 17 kilometres from the start in Plentzia on a stage of 191 kilometres, no one realy botherd to chase much.

The four were Eladio Jimenez (ibanesto), Dermot Nally(Paternina), Luis Pasamontes (Relax) and Gonzalo Bayarri (Phonak). At one point they had 13 minutes 20 seconds on the bunch, it looked good for them, until Fassa Bortolo started to help ONCE in the chase.

They were eventually caught after 160 kilometres out front, Things got a bit fast after that, but it still came down to a sprint. Another “foto finish” Rebellin thought he had it, but it went to Alejandro Valverde of Kelme, he also took the lead overall.

Some climbs tomorrow may shake things up a bit, 171 kilometres from Vitoria/Gasteiz to Santesteban/Doeztebe, four climbs, Zuarrarrate, Huitzi, Usategieta and the Alto de Saldias, the last one is on the finish circuit and is crossed twice, the first time 52 kilometres from the line, the second 18, no bunch sprint??
