Pais Vasco: Iban Mayo Dominates Stage 5, Wins Both Parts And Overall

Spanish rider, Iban Mayo from the Euskaltel-Euskadi team, took the opposition to pieces to-day. All the leading riders were on the same time this morning, by this afternoon there was no mistake who was in charge!

Mayo had won the first stage on monday and had the leaders jersey for the day, he lost it to the better sprinters through the week, then to-day in cold hard conditions he showed wno was boss with a double stage winning performance.

In the morning stage of 91 kilometres to Fuenterrabia, in a downpour of cold rain, he and Sanchez first got rid of the bunch and then dangerman, Dario Frigo (Fassa Bortolo) but they could not drop Tyler Hamilton (CSC). Mayo jumped 500 metres before the line, took the stage and the overall.

Stage 5a Result:

1st. I.Mayo (EUS) 2:19:37.
2nd. S.Sanchez (EUS) same time.
3rd. T.Hamilton (CSC) same time.
4th. D.Frigo (FAS) at 22 secs.
5th. A.Valverde (KEL)at 47 secs.
6th. A.Osa (iBAN) same time.

In the afternoon it was still raining, the course climbed from sea-level to 250 metres and included a narrow cobbled climb though a crowd of umbrella waving Basque fans. Mayo was again the fastest, nobody got near him on the 13 kilometre circuit round Fuenterrebia. Vicioso and Hamilton were the nearest at 11 seconds, the others over 20.

This performance of the Euskaltel team on home soil should help in getting a place in the Tour de France and possibly bolster the teams sponsership hopes.
