After his retirement from the Giro d’Italia, il Pirata is not lowering the flag: “The people still believe in me”.
Il Pirata is not quitting. Marco Pantani, in a conference held in a Hotel in Trentino, has refuted the voices that has insisted that he is retiring from racing since his abandonment form the Giro. “Retirement? I’ve taken it into consideration, but on the roads there are many fans who believe in me, more than certain people believe. I’ve received a lot from this sport and I feel
the need to redeem myself” explained the rider from Ramogna.
Pantani then followed this by expaining: “I’m not clinging to anything anymore. I’m not old and I don’t need to race but I can’t give in to those who want this situation. I think of those whose tenacity is a symbol.
Cycling in reality is made of few riders. The crowds shout my name even when I’m at the back of the group. I have been and am still in the fantasy of the fans. There is a fury against cycling right now, but I won’t retire and will continue to work for a group that is not seen”.
The Pirate’s project is to restart with a new team.
On this delusional season the captain of the Mercatone Uno squad is clear: “The problem is that the mentality is not there, this is the mentality of when Pantani rode his bike and had no other thoughts. I haven’t done this, I
haven’t been successful in separating the things in my head. In the tests my form has been excellent, but maybe there should have been mental tests as well… Since the 8th of October I’ve been away from my home. I’ve arrived at the Giro as best possible. However, stress is an important factor. One must have serenity to be successful in this sport. Riding and feeling like I have is not the best”.
