Perez Wins, Evans 2nd – Giro Stage 13

Julio Cuapio Perez of Panaria won today’s 13th Giro stage to the mountain top finish at Chieti. Mapei’s ex-mtb star and future road star Cadel Evans took an impressive 2nd, after 188km and the 11km climb of 1100 meters.

The stage was marked by a lone breakaway from Mark Lotz (Rabobank) who at one point gained over 5 minutes on the bunch. The real action of the day came on the final climb however, as several riders tried their luck, and we even saw the welcome site of Tyler Hamilton at the front.

With 4km to go it was Cupio and Evans who together took over the lead. Perez proved the strongest and soon powered away to victory.

Overall, Jens Heppner enjoys another fading day in pink, while no rider were expelled on drug charges. (that’s a good thing, right?).
