Piepoli Wins Asturias Overall

As predicted, (by yours-truly) ibanesto.com kept things together for their man in yellow, Leonardo Piepoli, who won today the Vuelta a Asturias. Many teams tried to split things up, mostly Jazztel-Costa Almeria for Gonzalo Bayarri, the winner of the Subida al Naranco on Tuesday, who was at 40 seconds overall. A small group of four nearly made it and again it was a East European doing the hard work, this time Rebiewski of the Polish team CCC, but they were reeled in all together for a slightly up hill sprint, taken by Pedro Lopes Goncalves (LA Pecol) of Portugal.

The bunch sprint played right into ”the Bankers” hands and provided ibanesto.com with an other stage race win. So the winner of the 46th. Vuelta Ciclista a Asturias is Leonardo Piepoli, second: David Bernabeu (Carvalhelhos-Boavista) of Spain at 3 seconds, third: Joseba Beloki (ONCE) also Spanish at 4 seconds. Beloki rode very strongly through out and his form seems to be coming right for the Tour de France.

Next short stage race (of many) in Spain is the Vuelta a Navarra, starts on the 28th. May and finishes on the 2nd of June, a 2.5 UCI event.
