What's Cool In Road Cycling

Quaranta’s Biggest Problem

In these last years at the sprints at Giro d’Italia Mario Cipollini had only one opponent: Ivan Quaranta, 28 years old, the sprinter of Index Alexia. “My intention is be the opponent of Mario, but I’m sincere, in this moment he is very strong, even more than last year, he is living his best season and he is the Giro favourite, not me” says Ivan who so far has had a lot of problems. After the victory at the Tour de Qatar he got a problem in one knee and then in one wrist, so he didn’t race. “I raced practically only the Giro del Trentino where there were only hills, now I’m fine , the wrist is fine and I can seize well the handlebars, and I’m trusting. From Trentino I went out well, but I still don’t have the condition for do a good final of race, essential for a sprinter as me. Maybe I will find a good condition after the first week of race. The first stages will be for riders for the races of North, so, I will be ready for the 2nd week, when there will be stages for sprinters. The time will plays for me”. In the last 3 years he won always 2 stages, in total 6. “But I want to do better. Win 3 stages it will be the max, but I prefer don’t compromise. I haven’t run a sprint for 6 months. Also the comparison with Cipollini isn’t possible: he won Milan-Sanremo and Gent-Wevelgem, and some other races, and I practically didn’t race”. But Index-Alexia will run also for the final ranking “for sure, we have Savoldelli who lost a Giro ’99 for a while and Lanfranchi who does always well at Giro. 2 men which can finish in the first positions. We are a strong team, a possible revelation of the race. You will see”. But his favourite for the final victory is Garzelli “because between the men for the final ranking is the best one which I saw in these months. He confirmed his condition with the victory at Larciano last Saturday, and he has a big team. I’m sure he will take early the leader jersey because he is the one who has less problems in the North, where the cold and wind will disturb the climbers. And the hills aren’t so difficult this year and for Stefano is an advantage”.
