What's Cool In Road Cycling

Rider Comments: TDF Stage 4

US Postal won the team time trial with a startling performance. Our Italian correspondent, Michele Tomasi, has translated the best rider comments, sent them to our Scottish/Spanish Bureau for editing, then on to you dear reader.

Stefano Garzelli (Vini Caldirola): “We don’t have strong men for the team time trial, but not slow either, we’re all at the same level. So we tried to have a regular speed, so that we don’t lose too much time”.

Stefano Zanini (Saeco): “To tell the truth, we were hoping for a better performance, because we are all in good condition. I don’t know what has been the reason for this bad result”.

Davide Rebellin (Gerolsteiner): “We have been unlucky, because one of our team-mates punctured just a few kilometers after the start. As it was so near the start, we waited for him. We didn’t check the course before, but we saw a tape made by one of our team managers, so we knew it was fast, without any big hills”.

Ivan Basso (Fassa Bortolo): “We started very fast and we are satisfied with our performance. We didn’t lose too much time. We waited for Velo because he punctured, as we needed him for the last part of this time trial. As for Gonzales and me, we’re both at the same level. There’s not a leader, but it will be the road to decide who is in charge. And the Tour is so long and so hard, that I think there’s space for everybody”.

Hugo Pena (US Postal): “I hope to give with this yellow jersey, a minute of peace to my country. It was just a case of if I captured the leaders jersey, nothing was decided, and Armstrong for me is a teacher”.
