With only 12 teams signing on this morning, the three day stage race, La Vuelta a La Rioja started to-day with all the Spanish teams represented, but the men to watch could be the Colombian 05 Orbitel team.

La Vuelta a La Rioja kicked off to-day with only 89 riders, as the teams of Gerolsteiner from Germany, Collstrop of Belgium and the Italian team, Fassa Bortolo will not start. There places have been taken by the Spanish Track Squad and Polish team Polsat.

To-day’s first stage of 130 kilometres started in Autol and finished in Calahorra. The race was enlivened by a group of 10 riders who managed to stay out in front of a ONCE powered bunch and finished 19 seconds up, David Herrero of Euskaltel won the sprint and leaders jersey.

Carlos Torrent (Paternina), last years winner took the bunch sprint for 11th. place, just piping ONCE’s Australian, Allan Davis and Jean Patrick Nazon (Jean Delatour). All the usual top men were in the main peloton, but of the dangermen in the break, Paco Mancebo of ibanesto.com will need eyes in the back of his head to watch the Colombians from 05 Orbitel, Felix Cardenas and Hernan Buenahora are at the same time as Mancebo and Hernan Bonilla is 7 seconds behind them.

Tomorrow looks like a ba**ard of a stage, if your not a climber, it’s 188 kilometres long and finishes up a brute of a climb, the Alto de la Cruz de la Demanda, 44 kilometres after the start in Albeda de Iregua they go up the 2nd. cat Alto de Peсa Hincada, then the course undulates to the base of the summit finish.
