Simoni to Miss L-B-L

– Reported by Saeco –

The Saeco-Longoni sport team will ride Liege-Bastogne-Liege on Sunday with a strong and well drilled team. Directeur sportif Giuseppe Martinelli will have Danilo Di Luca as team leader and the successful Italian talent -he has already won four races this season, is determined to leave his mark on the race which perfectly suits his style of racing, even if he is not in perfect form at the moment.

“To tell the truth, Di Luca has been trying to back to his best after an incredible start to the year,” Martinelli said. “His form has been affected by the crash at Milan-San Remo and then by a bad dose of flu which was made worse by the terrible weather at the Tour of the Basque Country. But he’s not beaten yet. Danilo has a strong character and I expect him to do well on Sunday.”

Gilberto Simoni will not be riding with Di Luca at Liege-Bastogne-Liege. After discussions with team staff, the 2001 Giro winner has decided to finish the Settimana Lombarda race currently underway to fine tune his form ready for the Giro del Trentino (April 25-28).

Simoni considers the Trentino race an important test for the Giro d’Italia which starts just two weeks later on May 11. Simoni -who is getting better every day, will be supported by the riders who will ride Liege-Bastogne-Liege with Di Luca: Mirko Celestino, Igor Astarloa of Spain, Damiano Cunego, Austrian Gerrit Glomser, Fabio Sacchi and Alessandro Spezialetti.
