Sprinters Jump At Herne Hill
The Big Boys are Coming to Play
“So what if O’Grady, Millar, Wiggins and McGee are coming? What about the track men, we want to see the Big Boys of Cycling, not these skinny roadies….” Well if it’s big boys you want it big boys you’re going to get. And they don’t come much bigger than Sean Eadie, World Sprint Champion and formerly Bearded Wonder, Eadie is coming to the hill and he’s bringing some mates.
Shane Kelly and Ryan Bayley are both confirmed to ride against the Big Man in the International Sprint and all three of them are going to have to face the cream of the British Sprint crop. With confirmed rides from Jamie Staff, Chris Hoy and last year’s International Sprint winner Ross Edgar the line-up just keeps getting better and with it, the competition tougher.
And if that’s not enough for sprint junkies, Roberto Chiappa has announced that he’s coming back to The Hill for the first time since winning the event in 2001. Seen as the “bad boy” of Italian sprinting Chiappa is mostly remembered by fans for unceremoniously dumping his French opponent Laurent Gane onto the boards in Manchester at the Worlds in 2000, hopefully there won’t be a repeat of that but we definitely expect some fireworks!
The great thing about the International Sprint at Good Friday is that its not just the big boys fighting it out for glory, local club riders are given a chance to take on some of the best in the world and see if they can upset the apple cart. Heats will be starting at 11.00am and then the finals will be going on throughout the day, ensuring that the excitement is cranked up from the minute the gates open till the last race is ridden.
All the named riders in the International Sprint will be attending the Centenary Dinner and Charity Auction that is being held in the evening at the Hilton Hotel Croydon. There are tickets available for the Dinner and Auction from Garry Beckett on 07802 898 259.
The International Sprint is just one of the many great races at this unique event for which tickets are still available online at www.hernehillcycling.com or you come along and buy them on the day.
